Hat for a toddler

Working on a hat for a toddler and I am getting super confused with this pattern

The pattern is

k1, p1, k1, s2kp1, (k1, p1) 2 times, k1

I’ve tried two different variations and they both dont become 49 stitches like the pattern says to.

Thanks guys!!

Row 5 for toddler

The stitch directions are:
s2kp2 - slip2 (together, knitwise), k1, pass 2 slipped stitches over

Looks like a double decrease so you’ll end with 73. What are you ending up with?

Hi! Thanks for responding

This is for row 5, I’m ending with either 51 or 47.

First time I worked on it I did - k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1 then repeated.

The second time I worked on it I did k1, p1, k1, s2kp1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, k1, p1, k1.

Both times the result wasn’t 49.

Oh! Duh. Okay so the 5th row is -
*Row 5: * k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, (k1, p1) 2 times , k1 (49 stitches)

This is always a little confusing to me, too. You repeat what is between the * and only knit the k1 at the end of the row. The part in parenthesis is repeated whatever is says after it. So -

k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, k1, p1, k1, p1 repeat this oart across the round

At the end of the round k1 at the end. See if that works.

So to be clear, the pattern is-

K1,p1,k1,s2kp2,k1,p1 then repeat once more then k1?

Or am I using that pattern all the way until the end then the last stitch I k1?

Thanks again for your help.

I agree with Jan’s answer.
Row 5: * k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, (k1, p1) 2 times *, k1 (49 stitches)

The repeat between the ** uses 10sts and leaves you with 8sts because of the double decrease. You work the sts between the ** 6 times. That’s a total of 48sts. End the row, k1 for a total of 49sts.

  • k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, (k1, p1) 2 times *,repeat 6 times total
end the row with k1 (49 stitches)

Wow!!! I keep trying it and it won’t work :frowning: I’m super upset! It keeps going up and down stitch wise. Why is the k1,p1 in brackets after the s2kp2?

The stitches in brackets are the ones to repeat 2 times: k1,p1,k1,p1.
If you were to write out the entire row it would be:
k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, k1, p1, k1, p1
k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, k1, p1, k1, p1
k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, k1, p1, k1, p1
k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, k1, p1, k1, p1
k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, k1, p1, k1, p1
k1, p1, k1, s2kp2, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1 (49sts)

It may help to mark off the 10 stitch repeats before you start the row. The last repeat before the end of round will have 11sts.

O M G-

I did EVERY variation except that.

Thank you soooo much!!!

That’s what I told you up thread. Guess you missed it. lol
