Hand Web piercing?

Unfortunately, I think that most doctors are automatically biased against any sort of “untraditional” piercing.

I think I live in my own little world cause I had never heard of this before or seen it :teehee:

I think if you want to do it go for it… but I would wonder if it would get caught with the yarn or make it difficult to knit… I would think after time you could take it out… I have always wanted to get that little piece of my ear pierced but haven’t had much success with piercings… if I go past my 2nd hole they start to create problems for me… have even got very expenisve earrings put in but still after a year or two I will wake up with an infection and yep I would clean them regularly prolly more than they say cause after loosing the first I didn’t want to loose the 2nd… I miss my top of the ear piercing :verysad:

I thought of that at first but my nurse practitioner is so wonderful about everything… I hope everyone has some so kind  and understanding about the “untraditional”. She was great when I got my tatoo–it got so infected :verysad: everything I try to do to my body that everyone else does quite effortlessly gets infected lol. It has become the family joke. They won’t let me near a manicurist or tattoo place now.

 :roflhard: my family won’t let me near an ear piercing booth… belive me I’d try it again but dh says ummm… do you want to become earless???

I wanna tattooo but I’m scared of needles and my dad…

Mr. Tea… KnittingHelp has a history of taking warmth, friendliness and respect to the extreme. I think we are very UNlike other boards in that way. And, as you can see by several of the responses above, we are very proud of our community.

There are SEVERAL OT threads on the board. They have never been discouraged. However, when someone states their very strong opinion over and over, and those that read it cannot see your facial expressions or hear your tone of voice, I can understand how that might seem argumentative or judgemental. Even if that’s not what you intended.

“Friendly arguments” can easily be misunderstood in this medium and turn nasty. Again, members that have been with us for a while have an understanding of the sense of community here and are unlikely to engage. I have noticed that our members will usually state their opinions once and then drop the subject. The poster of this thread asked for an opinion about how a piercing might affect her knitting. That’s all…

All of that said, I dont think that any of the above is what you intended. But, all of us, especially in OT threads about “controversial” subjects, need to be careful about the way we express our opinions. What did my Grandma used to say?? “If you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all…” :teehee:

I must say, without meaning harm to any, that I understand both Mr. Tea’s revulsion and the reaction to it in this forum. It might be an age thing (I’m 44), but I see people with multiple piercings and my first thought is “ouch,” and my second is “why would you do that to your body?”

But I have enough young friends with piercings that I realize it is not a sign of self-mutilation or self-hatred; it is, simply, a fashion choice. (I made some bad fashion choices in my time – but the leather pants weren’t permanently applied!) It’s not a fashion choice I would share, but I don’t think it carries any more moral or spiritual or psychological weight than plaid shirts or handknitted socks.

Mr. Tea was expressing, I think, a reaction that many have on seeing the pierced: an inability to understand why someone would voluntarily undergo minor surgery to achieve a “look.” He is no more to blame for that opinion, or for expressing it, than someone is for feeling that tattoos and piercings look cool. The trick is to express these opinions without making those who feel differently feel attacked or disrespected. It’s something I have to watch myself, especially on topics I feel strongly about.

Hope that wasn’t piling on too much on an already overworked topic. In response to the purely practical question: I think there’s enough response in the forum to say that this particular piercing probably would interfere with your ability to knit–as well as several other activities that require your hands!

 :roflhard:  I am afraid we are going to need pictures!

 :roflhard:  I am afraid we are going to need pictures!
Now THAT is the first thing I’ve seen on this topic worth my response. We will DEFINITELY need pictures of that.

(And I don’t say worth because the topic isn’t worthy, but because my knowledge and experience in the area aren’t worthy) :eyebrow:

I’ve never seen the web piercings but I wouldn’t want it for the reason stated by a few here. The worry that it would continually snag on my yarn or other things.

From Mr.Tea

If you feel differently then debate me on the issue, I’ll be happy to engage you in a friendly argument. I

Not to pick on you Mr. Tea but if a debate is something you enjoy (and reading your posts I have to say you do) you might want to consider finding an appropriate forum for that. There are MANY debate groups out there. This way you can come here and leave the slightly inflamatory opinions in the proper venue.

I think some here view your posts as digs and a deliberate attempt at starting an argument. One can voice ones opinion without be so verbally antagonistic.

Yeah, if I put on leather pants, they’d probably count as “permanantly applied.”

Now, to the original poster (I’m not sure if I should call you Naked or Pancakes :teehee: )…I would think it would interfere with your knitting, even after it healed, but I really don’t know because I don’t have it done, nor do I have any friends who do. Have you looked into things like the average healing time? I like to check these things out before I get pierced or tattooed, especially with something that might interfere with my daily life while it’s healing. Like before I got my foot tattooed, I’d read all kinds of crazy stuff about healing time and wearing shoes on the internet - everything from you have to wear shoes all the time as soon as you do it to you can’t wear anything on your foot for three weeks. I went to my tattoo shop and asked them. You might get better information if you try that. At least when I ask about things at mine, I find they’re pretty honest. If they don’t think it’ll work for you, they’ll tell you because they don’t want someone seeing a scar from a migrated, infected piercing and have you tell everyone where you got it.

:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:

Seriously, I think that this is the BEST idea I’ve heard yet today…

Pictures will NOT be forthcoming. Unless a blackmailer has some somewhere, all documentary evidence has been destroyed.

Thank you everyone for replying. =] I didn’t mean to start any sort of argument or anything. I think I’ve decided against the hand web piercing. It would interfere with my knitting. I go to school, which requires the use of my hands, I’m on the computer alot, and…We’re starting basketball. xD
Besides, the few stories I have read about ripping and discomfort have made me slightly weary about it.

I’m still trying to find a piercing I could get done. Ears are a good place, but I’m looking for some sort of variety. I have 6 in my left ear, and 5 in my right and those are my only piercings so far.

I could get some sort of surface piercing, but I heard they’re mostly temporary. Is there any longterm ones? That wouldn’t bother my knitting, of course.

Anyways- All feedback was appreciated, and I hope you guys will help me even more.
Especially those who have piercings themselves- Point me in the right direction!

The first non-ear piercing I got was my left nostril. I’d wanted it since I was about 12. I got it during orientation week at college when I was 17. Since then I’ve had my navel (twice…I had problems the first time - not serious ones - so they told me if I took it out and let it heal, they’d do it again and it’s fine now), my right eyebrow, and a rook piercing in my right ear. They were right for me, but that doesn’t mean I can tell you they’re right for you. I used to want my lip pierced, but I doubt it would look great on my face, so I didn’t do it. You’ve got to decide what YOU want. And if you’ve got questions about permanance or healing or any of that, call your piercer. They know!

That was my fault, not yours honey. Please don’t appologise.

I think I’d look okay with my nose done…Maybe my eyebrow. Those are against my school rules though. I think I’d be able to get away with a hand web…
I could get away with a Vertical tragus too…
What do you think?

I’m about to just take out all my earrings and just wear one cross earring like dear old George.

Bytheway, You make call me Naked or Pancakes. You could also call me Savannah, but my friends call me Savvy.

In Mexico, when a girl is born the nurses pierce their ears on day one. It’s sort of tradition. Jewelrers even sell “first pair” tiny earrings for baby girls.

So all of us girls have our first piercings before we know what piercings are.
Aside from the “born piercings”, I had 4 more done. Two on each lobe, one on the top part of the ear and a belly piercing. And eventually I do want a couple tattoos.

The piercing on the top of the ear I sort of gave up because the earring kepts getting snagged and I just went ahead and left it off. Then again, working with residents who at times get really combative it was better to not wear that one.
The belly piercing went well for the first year. I took off the earring to clean it out and as soon as the earring was off the piercing started bleeding like crazy. Took me about an hour to stop it and now I just have a scar left.

So yeah, I’m up for piercings but be careful of what you choose, why you choose it and what kind of care you need for it.
My sister’s a happy-go-lucky piercer. She’s had ear piercings like mad and often just mixes and matches what she’s wearing, plus belly piercing and is planning a tongue piercing.

But once the initial healing time of one of her double ear piercings was over, she chose a rather heavy stud to put on her cartilage. The stud pretty much ripped her cartilage to shreds when it popped out a month later. It scarred quickly, but still, it was very dangerous.

So choose carefully O_O

My personal opinion on this, when I read it was OW! followed by “wasn’t there some old wives tale about not cutting that part of your hand or you’d get tetanus”

I like piercings - when I was 16 I got my nose done - it lasted all of 4 or 5 hours before my father clapped me one round the head and told me to remove it NOW. I was bitterly disappointed. It actually looked quite good on my big honking nose!

I had 5 piercings in each ear instead - he wasn’t happy with that either but it was less shocking to him than my nose. Over the years they got removed and for a long time I just had 2 in my right ear one in my left. The second hole in my right ear never closed properly and it has to be cleaned out regularly. It isn’t infected, but if I didn’t ensure that it was cleared regularly it would become infected.

I don’t mind piercings on people - I always fancied a belly button one but I have a big phobia with my belly button. I don’t know why I do but I can’t put my finger in my belly button, it makes me feel sick and also I think if I push too hard I might pop it and whizz round the room like a balloon :roflhard: Yes I know its nutty as hell and I know its not normal - my ex found it hilarious and he would try to stick his finger in my belly button all the time just because he found my reaction hilarious too =P

My thoughts on hand web piercing is that I’d be worried very much about infection, and catching it on things. I’ve caught earrings on sweaters when putting them on and got small tears occasionally, they hurt like hell and get easily infected. I can’t imagine how careful one would have to be with hand web piercing.

I know I use my hands for everything - I should treat them like jewels I know but I do treat them as tools - very useful tools at that.

I’d be really upset if I couldn’t knit because of having something inserted in my web for fun, fashion or even for medical reasons. I think that’s more why I’d say no. However if anyone wants to have it done, feel free =D Live and let live I say =D

I like the look of the vertical tragus.

I liked the cartilage piercings, but I could never get them to heal properly because of my over the ear hearing aids I had to wear. Now, I can go without the hearing aids, but I’m too broke to go get the cartilage piercing redone. That’s really the only one I love having-- I kept a blue/green titanium ring in that I just loved the color on. I just could not get the dang thing to heal all the way-- even after over a year it was SOOO sensitive and sore all the time, I gave up.

Two laparoscopic surgeries in 8 months got rid of the belly button. Now I’ve got 2 scars instead… that make a perfect ‘+’ sign- I always joke that we know I can’t be a vampire- I would die from having a cross on me  I just never got that redone. My job doesn’t allow facial piercings… and I’m too much of a wimp for anything else, so I just go without now.

I still wish I could get that cartilage piercing to heal properly… I would get it done again if I could. Any thoughts?
