Hi, I am new to this website, but not new to knitting. I have been knitting for about 20 years. I learned when I was in college. Some projects I have done have turned out great and others well… My problem believe it or not even after all this time is my guage. It seems that I always need to drop atleast 3 needle sizes in order to get my guage correct. In addition I’ve noticed that my stitches aren’t as uniform as I would like. I currently knit in the continental style which I taught myself so maybe I am not holding the yarn correctly. Any suggestions? Thanks,

it seems like you already know how to measure gauge, since you know you have to go down a few sizes to get gauge. That’s 95% of the battle right there. As far as keeping stitches uniform, besides practicing there isn’t much you can do. You might try changing needle material, like try metal, plastic and bamboo and see which one is easiest for you. Dishcloths are a good way to practice gauge/uniformity, beause they’re small and functional.
It sounds like you are knitting way too loosely, try tighter, perhaps by tensioning the wool in your hands differently?
