Guage guage guage Can you cheat if your needles are

Well. Probably a stupid question but I just want to think this through and get your feedback. I’m going to make (I hope) this beautiful patterned vest in Vogue Knitting Fall 2005. Of course they want the size needle I don’t have, a 7. So I tried the guage on Size 8 and instead of 30 rows equaling
4" they equal 5" a little over 5", 5 1/4. So, I’m thinking and is this wrong

why can’t I make the smaller version Bust 35 instead of medium Bust 41

would that work? Or will sizing at the top get thrown off etc.

Or am I just being cheap and lazy and I have to go buy those Size 7s!

Thats the kind of trick I would try.

I suppose how successful it is would depend on how fitted the garment is. If its boxy and loose you probably could get away with it. If its fitted - you will just have an ill fitting garment.
Not that I would stop myself from experimenting.

But really - go buy the 7s. Your vest will thank you for it.

[color=blue]Looser gauge certainly will affect the looks of the pattern stitch.
By any chance do you have size 6? Your gauge might even be too big on a 7.
How far off are you with “___sts = 4”? [/color]

I would probably try it and then go kick my own a$s because I did all that work and something isn’t fitting right! It’s worth it to get the correct needles, you’ll need them again for something else!

Size 7 needles are going to be used again and again, so I’d buy them.

Ha ha ha, Ingrid cleared that one up fast! I suppose I just gotta go buy them today. It’s my favorite number 7 anyhow! It’s a sweet little vest with a very interesting range of different patterns in it, block and seed etc so I might as well do it right. Don’t have size 6 anyhoo.
