Guage adjustment question. HELP!

Hi…I’m new and coming back to knitting after years of deserting it…
I was wondering how you adjust your pattern if your guage doesn’t match what is written.

The yarn recommended uses 17 stitches=4" with 7 US needle. The yarn I have purchased says it uses 20 stitches=4" with a 7 US needle.

Is there a way to use my yarn or will I have to purchase the yarn suggested? Is there an easy way to adjust the pattern without headaches?

By the way, the item will be felted if that is any consolation.

Thanks for your help!!

If it’s something that is going to be felted, then it really doesn’t matter all that much except that for felting you want to have a fairly loose knit - looser than the ballband recommends, that’s for sure. So instead of going with the gauge that is given on the ballband, you’ll want to follow the pattern gauge.

But generally speaking:

If you need MORE stitches per inch, you will need to use a smaller needle size.

If you need LESS stitches per inch, you will need to use a larger needle size.

But generally speaking:

If you need MORE stitches per inch, you will need to use a smaller needle size.

If you need LESS stitches per inch, you will need to use a larger needle size.

OH!! That makes sense! Thank you so much for your help!
