Great pattern, boring knit

I’ve been wanting to make the Mara for a long time now. I finally got around to it. I love the shawl, but all this garter is sooo boring! I don’t even want to think about the ruffle! :passedout: I think the wingspan is about 32" now. Only 14" more to go! LOL I stumbled onto the yarn on the Elann web site. It was on sale, so I thought I’d give it a try. I had never heard of it, but it’s called Jojoland Rhythm. It’s 100% wool, and, as you can see, it’s self-striping. Here’s what I have so far:

Wake up! How can I tell you how lovely it looks when you’re :passedout: ??? It really is beautiful. I know what you mean, I’m working on endless growing rows of stockinette making a cape.

Gorgeous! and perfect with the self-striping yarn.
I’ve finished about one-third of the Hoover blanket (central double knitting panel) and I’m ready to clean house just for the excitement. Yikes, I thought garter stitch was slow growing. We should all press on because the end result will be worth it.
Right?

Very very pretty, but, yeah, it sounds a bit tedious. Can you listen to an audio book while you knit or “watch” TV maybe?

This is an adorable shawl!

Yes…the miles of garter stitch are our PENANCE to pay…but the end will be worth it!

I especially like the simplicity of this shawl!

Oy vey! You guessed it…I downloaded the pdf, too…and plan to knit this for my daughter sometime this Fall. I just gotta find the yarn in my stash.

There are 2,783 Mara projects over at Ravelry…and the knitters have used all sorts of yarn! Even Malabrigo Merino, a worsted weight. I have loads of cream…do you think this shawl could be just as nice in a solid color?

I wish I had 675 yards of MadelineTosh dk…but I don’t…and I can’t afford to buy ANY YARN this year.
Period. It’s stash knitting for Artlady.

The yarn you’ve chosen is so nice!!! Plow forth young maiden…you shall overcome! Before ya know it! :happydance:

what pattern is it? i would love to knit it up

She mentioned the name of the shawl in her post…the Mara.

But here is a link for it! Mara Shawl as seen on Ravelry.

oh wow so pretty… that is next after i finish all of my projects

Yeah…but I’m so tempted to start this while we’re on vacation in the mountains next week! Mindless garter stitch is just the thing for sitting outside in the shade with a glass of white wine! Right?

I found some yarn in my stash…I’ve had some Malabrigo Merino for several years…plain undyed natural cream…hoarding it actually, truth be told…and I think a Mara in cream will be very versatile. I want to give it to my daughter, Lauralee. She is (at the moment) a soft redhead, and (all the time) green eyed! She’s creamy skinned, but tans up well (I think the Swedish and Filipino in her!)

Anyway, what do you think about cream? There are a few Malabrigo cream Mara’s over at Ravelry…they look stunning.

Most people have used the US 8 needle…but another lady adamantly swears that the US 9 gives a better drape. Less compact, more drapey. Well, hers looks gorgeous, so I’m going with the larger needle. Most people seem to use 2.8-3 hanks of Malabrigo for an average size. One lady used 4 hanks, but its humongous. Very long. Over the butt long. Way too long for my little 5’2" daughter.

These are my three middle kids…Jason, Lauralee in the middle, Maureen on the end. The shawl is for the short daughter! The daughter that’s a soft redhead right now.

My gram was a red head before she greyed to white, she looked amazing in cream, a good complement to her pale irish skin

I found a photo of Lauralee with her soft red hair! It’s becoming on her, don’t you think?

muy bonita! i love it, she’s beautiful

Thanks…and the nice thing…she’s beautiful on the inside, too!
And such a great wife and mother! And cook! And decorator!

always a good thing, speaking of mothers, my older brother’s fiance is carrying their first child, and we found out… it’s gonna be a girl!!! haha i was right

LOL Yes, garter is a great stitch, but in small quantities!

I think it would be lovely in a solid! I like the simplicity of the shawl, also. The ruffle is a little different from others I’ve seen. I’ve had my eye on this pattern for a long time. The yarn I’m using is worsted weight, and I think a size nine needle would have worked fine (and knitted up a little faster, too? LOL).

Very good idea! This project is an excellent “tv/audiobook project.” Maybe I could start another project that’s a little more interesting, but keep this one for just that purpose. That way I could swap projects when I can’t take any more garter stitch!

Good idea. I like to have more than one thing going. I’m doing stockinette by the mile right now and need something else to work on for a bit of variety. I think I’ll find a stitch pattern I want to try and do it up as a dish/wash cloth. I need something going in cotton yarn to work on when it gets hot.

Ahh, now THAT sounds relaxing!

I think the cream would look perfect on her! Malabrigo is sooo soft, too.

I don’t know how much Jojoland I’ll be using. People on Ravelry say that the ruffle really eats up the yarn, so I want to be sure to save enough yarn for a fairly wide ruffle.

i had to take a break from my cloak and baby blanket… too much garter and stockinette stitch… so i made my scarf
