It’s in the Summer 2010 Interweave Knits as well if you get the magazine.
This buttonhole is a little fiddly, but looks beautiful. I will definitely be trying it on a my next project that needs them!

I got that yesterday in my e-mail! I’m going to be starting a cable cardigan for my father-in-law soon and can’t wait to try that out. The Tulip Buttonhole… he’s Dutch so it should work
It is quite beautiful and different. I don’t see myself using it on stuff I make for myself though. It’s just a little too feminine for me to wear.
Tattoos, piercings, shaved head, and tulip buttonholes just don’t sound like they go together.
There’s a masculine buttonhole? :?? Part of what makes this one good is it’s reinforced ends which knows know gender. A buttonhole is a buttonhole. If you don’t like the name tulip call it a Budweiser Buttonhole… or whatever.
I got this e-mail, too, and thought it was a beautiful buttonhole. I would like to use it on a cardigan for my 3.5 year-old granddaughter, but wouldn’t it be too big?
Done the way they show it in the sample it would be, but you can make it as large or as small as you want. It’s a matter of how many you bind off and cast on. The technique would remain the same.
Can I call it the “UBER BUTCH HYPER SUPER TESTOSTERONIZED MAN CUT HOLE IN MY SHIRT WHERE A BUTTON JUST HAPPENS TO GO CUZ BUTTONHOLE JUST SOUNDS TO GIRLIE BUTTONHOLE”?
Sure, but that’s a tad long to say. :roflhard::roflhard:
ok trvnn…if you don’t like the word buttonhole, maybe the manly version of it would be “butt in hole” ? I’m sure guys would really go for that one. LOLOLOL
(sorry, couldn’t resist)
but I would have to make 100 of these while watching the video before I got one right, methinks. Or is it really less complicated than it looks, Jan?
It does look fiddly but I might try it. I am never happy with button holes and usually end up crocheting around the edges to make them firmer.
Bambi
Chicken! BWAK BWAK BWAK! :roflhard:
The sweater I’m making doesn’t use this type of buttonhole so I haven’t actually tried it. I’ve never been happy with any buttonhole I’ve tried though. So I think this one is beautiful and worth a try even if it is fiddly. As long as the entire sweater isn’t made of buttonholes…
Hi! :waving:
There’s a link to a video in Jan’s posting that demonstrates the technique pretty clearly. I suspect it’s one of those things that once you learn it and do it a few times you just go “Duh! How easy is THAT?”
Just another arrow in our knitting quiver!
Thanks, Jan!
Happy knitting,
Ruthie

I’m always on the lookout for something new to try. Can I find it anywhere else?
I, too, have shied away from buttonholes except the tiny yo kind on baby sweaters. The ones I’ve tried on adult sweaters look awful!!! But this alternative looks doable and quite nice. Maybe I’ll reconsider the whole buttonhole issue now! Thanks, Jan, for the link.:knitting:
It still works for me, Lana. :?? It’s in the summer 2010 Interweave Knits as well though.
Jan and/or other mods,
Can we make this a sticky? It seems like a topic that one would want to reference each time one attempts a cardigan that requires several buttonholes.

I got it! Thanks Jan.
Maybe they were working on the site at 4:20 this morning when I tried the link several times.
I’ll be practicing that, just as soon as I finish my current project.
For those of you who want to see this buttonhole in action…
This is my new design being tested right now, it uses the “Tulips” buttonhole…I dont have buttons for it right now but my testers wanted a picture…so it gives you a good look at the buttonhole…its easy once you do it a few times…
Dont look at my double chin or the cool 80’s earring…LOL
Unfortunately we can’t sticky post everything that makes a good reference. We’d end up with dozens of sticky posts and that would be incredibly annoying to scroll through just to read the posts.
It would be best if you bookmark it. If you want to bookmark a single post (such as the first one with the link) just click on the number (in this case #1) and click it. Then you can bookmark it without the entire thread. If you want the entire thread just bookmark it normally.
