I like the look of both yarns held together. I think the garter is most interesting but the stockinette is nice too.
If your worried about it being rigit you could try going up a needle size.

I make a lot of childrens’ things with Red Heart Yarn because it wears like iron, and it does feel rough when you are working with it. A couple of trips through the washer and dryer with a little fabric softener and it will be much softer to the touch.
Your tweed and print yarns together should make a handsome boy’s blanket.

I’ve been going great guns with this blanket. It is now 60 inches long, by 68 wide. I want it to be about 80 inches long, so have 20 inches to go. Here it is today:
Grandson is eagerly awaiting it, since I gave each of his two sisters there a few months ago. I need to knit and knit! Good thing we are having a cool summer here, with lots of rain.
