Going Crazy Please Help

Ladies, I’m about to lose my mind. Can you help?

Here’s how the pattern for the sleeves on a baby sweater reads:

Cast on 32 sts. Work same as body rib for 1.5". OK fine.
Change to stockinette, work for 2 rows RS row. Still OK.

Begin sleeve shaping: Inc 1 st on each side every 2nd row 1X,
then every 4th row 8X. Cont in pat st until piece meas 7 inches. Bind off at 50 sts.

So when I got to the 2nd row I inc 1 st at the beginning and at the end and did the same thing for rows 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30

When I got to the 4th row I inc 2 at the beginning and at the end and did the same thing for rows 4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32.

The bind off winds up at 100 stitches!!! the sleeve looks ridiculous! :verysad:

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??? I know it has to do with the increases but I don’t know what??? H E L P. Thank you.

Begin sleeve shaping: Inc 1 st on each side every 2nd row 1X,
then every 4th row 8X. Cont in pat st until piece meas 7 inches. Bind off at 50 sts.

32 to start plus

Increase at each end of 2nd row - 2 more
Increase at ends of rows 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, 34 - 16 more

32 + 2 + 16 = 50

I don’t see in your instructions that you should incr 2 sts at each end…After you do the every 4th row 8 times, then you just knit on those 50 st until the sleeve measures 7 in from the beginning. Make sense?? Good luck

OK, so forget whatever I was doing??? and on the 2nd row inc 1 and then just inc 2 on rows 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30 and 34?

what was all that stuff in the pattern about “then inc 8X every 4th row”

I’m sorry to be such a dummy but pattern reading makes me crazy but how many scarves can you knit? :pout:

I so appreciate the help…this sweater is about one set from being tossed out the window!

it should read inc 1 st on each side every 4th row and do this 8 times I think you are reading the insructions backwords

I think people that write patterns should given them to people who use patterns to proof read!!! Take a deep breath…you have it right in you mind, just translate that to you fingers!!! Be sure you post a pic of the fo…that means you absolutely can’t toss it out the window!!! Tillie

OK, so I cast on 32 sts…work body rib for 1.5". 2 rows stockinette. Ok…now, increase just one st every 4th row and do this 8 times so it would be on the
4th row
8th
12th
16th
20th
24th
28th
32nd

oh, please tell me why patterns are so confusing!

You increase one stitch AT EACH END of the row.

Increase at each end of 2nd row - 2 more
Increase at ends of rows 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, 34 - 16 more

You’re not a dummy You are asking questions that we all had to ask at some time or other.

Good for you. Keep asking and keep knitting and please don’t launch it out the window.

jinty

ok, you start wihth 32
row 2 you make a single increase at each end 32+2=34
rows 6, you make another single increase at each end 34+2=36
row 10, you make another single increase at each end 36+2=38
row 14,you make another single increase at each end 38+2=40
row 18,you make another single increase at each end 40+2=42
row 22,you make another single increase at each end 42+2=44
row 26,you make another single increase at each end 44+2=46
row 30,you make another single increase at each end 46+2=48
row 34 - you make another single increase at each end 48+2=50

it sounds like you were making two increases at each end of the row, instead of one, then you were making 4 new stitches on each increase
hope this helps
