Ginger by Kim Hargreaves Patt Help

I’m starting the free pattern Ginger and being a beginner knitter, I’m a bit confused by this (indented):

Beg with a K row, work in st st as folls:
Work 8 rows.
Change to 5mm (US 8) needles.
Dec 1 st at each end of next and every foll 6th row until 54 (58: 62: 66: 70) sts rem.
Work 9 (11: 11: 13: 13) rows, ending with a WS row.***
Inc 1 st at each end of next and every foll 6th row until there are 66 (70: 74: 78: 82) sts."

-So do I decrease on the row immediately after the 8th row, meaning rows 9,15, 21, etc until I reach the corresponding stitch count according to my size? Then 11 rows of stockinette?
Same with the increase?

"Row 1 (RS): K2, K2tog, K to last 4 sts, K2tog tbl, K1, pick up loop lying between
needles and place loop on right needle (note: this loop does NOT count as a st), sl

*last st knitwise"

-Does it matter if I pick it up from the back or front?

I’ve never encountered a pattern like this so it’s a bit confusing with the shortcuts. I’d really appreciate your help. Thanks!

You’re correct in your first part, regarding the rows you need to decrease on etc, and for the increase. As for how to pick the loop up, I don’t think it matters too much, if the pattern doesn’t specify. If it were twisted when worked, would it show, is my question here.

Thanks! It doesn’t specify, and in the next row, the loop will be included in “P tog first st and loop”, so I guess it won’t show?

There are some more confusing bits for me when it comes to shaping the neck, but I will deal with that when I actually get there

It sounds like it will blend in just fine! These sorts of instructions can confuse even seasoned knitters at times, so you’re in good company!
