Getting started in dyeing

Hey everyone! I’m really interested in starting dyeing my own yarn, especially to sell on Etsy. So, what does one need to get started, in terms of supplies? Where do you buy the yarn to dye? Any suggestions before I dive right in?

I’ve read some articles but kind of prefer to get ideas and tips from you guys if you have anything additional to offer!

:waving: Hey Rachel!
Go to Knitpicks.com. Not only do they have bare yarn you can buy to dye, but they have a whole kool aid dying tutorial. I printed it and use it all the time.
Of course spinning your own bare yarn is cheaper, but its a nice place to start to see if you like it:yay:

hi rachel!

my first suggestion is to have fun!

try out different tutorials …there are so many around and you will see that everyone has their own way of dyeing.

use cheaper priced or recycled yarns that you like to start with…that way if they felt or need to be dyed and overdyed many times you won’t feel too bad about it…heh

koolaid is great to start out and experriment with but i wouldn’t suggest it for items to sell due to the fading

procion mx and jacquard dyes seem to be the most popular…i’ve only used jacquard and they are very easy to use. one of those little jars can go a long way.

you’ll want a special set of pots/pans/utensils that will only be for used for dyeing, rubber/latex gloves, vingear, lots of towels!, a strainer can come in handy.

i haven’t bought much yarn for dyeing but knitpicks is a good start.
and of course there are alot of places online to buy yarn

hope that helped!

Before you start selling your yarn, make sure it is color fast. nothing is worse for a knitter/crocheter/weaver than to wash the item and have the colors bleed all over the place.

I TOTALLY agree about the colorfastness. That’s noe of my big priorities  Thanks!
