getting back to knitting

I used to knit all the time, but have not picked up my needles in a few years. What do you all suggest to get started again?. I am retired now, have a new 18 month old granddaughter and really want to get back into it.

I think that whatever you feel for, begin with it. As you have been a person that used to knit all the time I do not think you will have any big trouble just because you had a few years of break from knitting. There might be some small details you have forgotten, but we are here to help with that and also you find videos on youtube about almost any knitting topic.

Cotton dishcloths are a nice small project to warm up with: they don’t take long, and you can try some simple texture patterns to refresh your memory. Plus you end up with something useable, even if your tension is a bit off or you make a couple of mistakes.

Then maybe you could try a simple drop-shoulder cardigan or pullover; wool if you are in the northern hemisphere or cotton if you are “down under” like me.

Using a variegated yarn can add interest to simple projects – it’s fun to watch the colours play out!

I hope you enjoy diving back in. There is lots of help and inspiration available here

Maybe a Christmas tunic?

Or perhaps the colour work is a bit much after a break from knitting?

Maybe a little throw or snuggly blanket out of simple squares?

There a a bunch of these designs on ravelry (do you know ravely? Lots of patterns and ideas to browse through).

I too have started knitting - well into retirement and a couple of years after broken wrist. I don’t have a baby grandchild though, so I guess you’ll be wanting to produce something in that direction. I’ve knitted a couple of winter hats…very satisfying - they’re warm and good fit. Happy knitting!

I’d start off with an easy baby blanket. If you knitted before, you’ll remember how to knit and purl, increase and decrease and, unless you choose a lacy blanket, that’s probably all you’ll need to remember.

Baby hats knitted flat are also very easy and quick. Might start with one of those.

I too have taken up my needles after 30 years :see_no_evil: I’m sticking to DK baby cardigans and hats as I like to see my work come up quickly !!! I’ve now tried a very simple arran (4rows to pattern) and I’m so delighted with myself :joy::joy: And as a sufferer of depression and anxiety it helps still my mind . Wish I’d tried it sooner .

I too am retired and haven’t knitted since I was 10! I started with hats and scarves and then did about 10 blankets. I just finished my 3rd sweater. I’m always trying to challenge myself to keep my brain churning!
