General slip stitich?

When a pattern calls for a slipped stitch, do you normally, unless specified, slip it as if to purl? And then do you slip it with yarn in front or back? Does it matter which way you slip it and where the yarn is if the slipped stitch was intended to be purled or knit in say a 2x2 rib patteren?

I guess I never knew the “genereal rule” about slipped stitches.

If it doesn’t say I usually slip as if to purl with the yarn in back. Unless it’s a ssk or such.

If you move the yarn to the frount and then slip the stich it will make a little bar sometimes… there are times when that’s what you want… like this pattern…

In trying to self-teach myself I did an item where every time I slipped the stitch, I did it with yarn in back but slipped as though I were putting needle in for a purl stitch. Obviously this works, however, not that long ago I read on here, from one of the more experienced knitters, that you should slip stitches knit-wise (with yarn in back) unless otherwise noted… at least I THINK that is what I remember them noting.

In any case, on the current project I’m knitting (or rather one of them) I’m slipping knit-wise and I believe it makes for a MUCH nicer stitch. Am I going to undo the item I had slipped purl-wise (with yarn in back) and redo it? ARE YOU CRAZY??? LOL… I’m just considering it “customized”. LOL

Best of luck to you!

You only slip knitwise if it’s part of a decrease, like SSK/SKP or slip 1, knit 2, psso. Otherwise you slip purlwise, if you slip at all, and it depends what works for you.
