I am starting a new project. The pattern has 2 new stitiches I am not familiar with. They are (K1,P1,K1) in the same stitch and purl 5 together. I have done the purl 5 together with a crochet hook, but do I then do I make the stitch in to one purl stitch?
I hope someone can help me. I am using # 9 needles and getting 18 stitches to 4 inches.
If you haven’t checked the videos on this site for the K1, P1, K1 in one st, then you might try there first. I don’t remember seeing it there, but it’s been awhile.
If nothing is found there, then here’s what you need to do:
K1, but don’t slip the old st from the left needle. Bring the yarn to the front as you would for a purl st and purl into the front of that same st. Again, do not slip that old st from the needle. Bring the yarn to the back again and knit into the BACK of that same st. THEN you can slip it off the left needle and you will have 3 sts where you once had just 1.
As for the p5 tog, that’s exactly what you do – and it aint’ always easy! Bring your yarn to the front, then slip your right needle into all of the next 5 sts on your left needle. Yarn over and pull the loop through all 5 sts. Now you will have 1 st where you once had 5. HINT: If you have trouble getting the yarn through all 5 sts at once, try slipping them over, one-by-one until all 5 are done.

You don’t have to knit into the back of the stitch, you can do it all in the same leg. Knit into the st and leave it on the L needle, bring yarn to the front and purl into the st, then move the yarn back and knit into it. You can also do a k, yo, k into the stitch; the YO doesn’t make a large hole like it does when you do it between sts, and it looks a little like you purled it.
