General advice

Hello,

I taught myself to knit a few years ago and was really enjoying it. Then life took over and I haven’t done much in the last two years. I’m looking for a pattern to get me back into it and wondered if anyone could suggest something. Nothing too difficult as I only know the basics and will probably have to revise those! I’ve been having a look on various websites but nothing has caught my eye :frowning:

Have a nice weekend :waving:

I’m in the process of knitting Yvone’s Double Flower DishclothKnit in the round all you need is knit, Yarn Over (YO) and Knit-2-together(K2Tog).

Thanks … I’ve never done any knitting in the round but there’s a first time for everything :o)

Just like knitting flat you just don’t have to turn your piece around. May suggestion would be two circular needles.

Two circular needles? Oh dear, I’m lost … I’m going to have to start by learning how to knit in the round and go from there, hee hee hee.

I started with a simple hat, then learned new techniques with each hat.

This was my first one, flat:

Then circular, although you can do the first hat circular too:

As I was knitting, I learned each new technique by watching videos and asking questions here. We have videos here for everything, and Youtube is also excellent.

I’m now on my 5th hat, and it’s so good that I made it for a friend.

I would do a simple scarf. I use number 10 1/2 needles, cast on 20 or 24 depending on how wide I want it. I do a k1,p1 or k2,p2 rib. The length is about 60 inches. My adult sons like these. They’re the same on both sides, very warm with the rib padding, and not too “girly” for the guys.

well, if you know basics and want to move on from there… anything goes.
Knitting is really not difficult, once you do it.

So the first question to answer is: What project would you like?
A dishcloth, a scarf, a hat, a potholder, wristwarmers, a cowl… those are lots of very simple projects at a small scale…

baby cloth can be good projects if you want to make those…

and they can all be done with that much detail that you will drown. But you can make simple ones and advance from there…

Bigger projects (pullovers, jackets, vests, blankets) can be done simple or elaborate as well. But bigger projects mean slower success-feeling. That is why usually small scale projects are recommended. Then go to bigger things…

so let us know what your desires are… then we help you find a pattern that you can master…

Katz Knitter … thanks, I’ll take a look over the weekend, work has been crazy lately and I haven’t had time to look. I know what you mean about the videos … they’re such a great help

fatoldladyinpjs … I was looking for something different as I’ve done quite a few scarves so I wanted a break from them before starting on them again for Christmas presents but thanks

hyperactive … I’m not sure what I want to make … something useful … a jumper, a blanket, a bag, a hat, toys for my Godchildren … I don’t mind slow progress … I just need something that’s easy to follow to start with.

Thank you all for your help

are you a member of ravelry? You shoule become one, if not. Free, usefull, addictive, full of patterns and links.

How about charity dolls?

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/one-piece-knitted-doll

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/duduza-comfort-doll-knit

easy to follow, quick, endless variations and you can spice the patterns up if you like, you just do not have to. So it is an easy project to restart with.

And your grandchildren will love them. Make a fireman, a snowman, a nurse, and so on, you know?

Or this pattern here?

Or are the kids more wild than that? Monsters?

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/monsters
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/monster-chunks
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/monster-for-your-love

there is a whole book of them, but you would have to buy that: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dot-the-dress-up-box-monster

My frog prince, of course:
my blog post about the pattern
but that is step more… not hard but just a little more work.

What about a baby sweater or child’s sweater? They’re always welcome and they are a great fall-back project when nothing else appeals.
The patterns can be as simple or complicated as you’d like and there’s always help here if you need it.

I love your name- fatoldladyinpjs!!!

Hyperactive … I took your advice and signed up for Ravelry. I’ll take a look at the links you sent me over the next few days, thanks  I’m sure I’ll find something soon

Salmonmac … that could be a good idea as it would be a good birthday present for one of my Godchildren. Thanks

Stitchabit … I agree, the name is ace!

I’ve had a look at the links and they’re all nice but I think the monsters are my favourite, they’re brilliant. I will definately have to try some of those. Thanks again for all your help
