Gauge swatch

Can someone tell me if a pattern gives a gauge in pattern and a gauge in stockinet, should you do a gauge swatch in each?

And what is the reason some patterns do this, while others only give the stockinet gauge. Is there an advantage to giving both, if so, why don’t all patterns do this?

Thank you,

It’s a good question. I do the swatch in pattern if a gauge is given for the pattern stitch. If the sweater is not overall pattern stitch but half stockinette, half pattern, I might do both to make sure the same needle size will work throughout.
It may be that the gauge is also given for stockinette to help you determine the yarn weight to buy.
As to why some patterns only give the stockinette gauge, it might be that the pattern stitch gauge isn’t substantially different from stockinette. That’s a good question for the designer.
