Gauge stitches/inch off, rows/inch right

I’m attempting the sweater pattern “Lewis” by Drops Design. The pattern calls for two different weight yarns knitted together, I’m trying a single yarn. I swatched and came up an inch short in stitches per inch and right on with rows per inch. I went up two needle sizes to make stitches per inch, but the result felt too loose. Should I use the next garment size up or go with using the larger needles?

It can be tough to change yarn weight especially when your spi are so far off. Maybe try knitting the swatch for the next size up? Use the needle size that gives you the fabric you like. If all else fails use the yarn weights suggested.

What yarn weights does it say to use and what are you using?

http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/us/pattern.php?id=5305&lang=en is the pattern.

The yarns called for are a DK weight and a lace weight. Drops Karisma and Drops Kid-silk. The gauge called for is 18 stitches = 4 inches, 24 rows = 4 inches on US 9 needles. I’m getting 18 stitches = 3 inches, 24 rows = 4 inches. on US 11 needles I get the 18 = 4, but my rows come out to 24 = 4.5.

Hope that helps

If you like the fabric with the needles you first used, yes, knitting the next larger size should work. Figure out your stitches per inch and see if the number of sts for tha larger size (especially across the chest) will give you the measurement you want. Make sure you’re measuring stitch gauge across the middle of the swatch.
