Ugh - I’m starting a new project (seen here), and I went to my LYS and bought this amazing wool, and the wool says that the gauge is 14 stitches = 4" on size 10 needles. The pattern says I need 10.5 stitches = 4", so I tried my size 13 needles. Then I tried my size 15 needles. I’m now getting 17 stitches = 4".
I’ve been knitting long enough that my stitches are not that tight. What am I doing wrong, here? My size 10 needles were not even close to the gauge that the yarn said I should have. My mom suggested it was a misprint, but all three skeins say the same thing. I don’t even know where to find needles bigger than 15’s. What do I do?
The yarn you have may be thinner than what’s in the pattern. Or it may be the gauge is over a pattern stitch, not stockinette. It would help if you woudl say what yarn is used in the pattern, and what you have, but I doubt the label is misprinted.
If you like the sts you get with the 13s or 15s then you can adjust your st number so you get the same measurement as the item. What are you making - a scarf, hat, sweater…?
The yarn used in the pattern is Adriafil Charme (40% extrafine merino, 50% dralon, 10% cashmere, 51 yds/47 m per 50g skein). I bought 100% undyed peruvian wool, weight 250 grams/8.75 oz, approx 437 m/478 yds. I like the stitches I’m getting, but I’m afraid to make any adjustments to the pattern, because I’m new at this. I’ve posted the link to the pattern above, but it’s a cabled sweater-coat with a shawl collar.
I think you have a light bulky, while the yarn in the pattern seems to be a super bulky. The 7mm needles are a little larger than US 10½s, the 7.5 mm are a bit smaller than 11s. You could work a larger size of the pattern to adjust it. Figure out which needle to use and what your sts per inch are and multiply that times the finished measurement you want. Then check the pattern sizes to see which one is close to that stitch number and use that. Lengths are given in inches so work the measurement for your ‘normal’ size.
