Gauge for knitting in the round?

Ok, this question really makes me feel like a noob, but here it is:

I don’t normally make gauge swatches (bad me, I know) but when I have in the past they were all for pieces knit on straight needles. My question is, I’m getting ready to do a sweater in the round and I am wondering if I have to knit my swatch in the round, or do I knit it in garter stitch, as the sweater is knit in stockinette in the round (which is the same as garter straight, right?)

Thank you all

Since stockinette in the round is all knit, you can do a swatch that will be the same as in the round without having to cast on so many stitches.

Cast on your stitches onto a circular needle or dpn–just enough for your swatch. Knit across, but instead of turning the needle and working the back, slide the stitches to the other end of the needle and loosely bring the yarn across the back. It’ll make a long strand there, but your gauge will be the same as if you knitted in the round.

Thank you,

I knew someone here would know.

I was a little confused about it, because I’ve never knit in the round before. I’m sure I’ll be back with more questions>
