Hi,
I am nearly at the end of knitting my daughters christening gown. In the make up section it says to gather the sleeve to 6cm, I assume to make them puffy or folded. I have never done this before, has anyone any tips or advice on how to do this and get it right? Would you just use thread?
Thank you,
Louise
Congratulations on the new baby girl! That’s wonderful news. It’s perfect to have knit her christening gown.
You have a good solution. Use thread doubled or a strand of the same knitting yarn to gather the sts till you have the given length, 6cm. Then you can stitch that section into the armhole opening and either remove the gathering thread or not as you wish.
In sewing a double line of sts would be used with the seaming done between the lines but I don’t think that’s necessary here.

In addition to using the yarn strand to gather the stitches, if I was doing this myself I know I’d want to place a stitch marker around the centre stitch and match this up with the shoulder seam when joining, to make sure I had 15 stutches either side for an even gather. Knowing me I would probably also work out the ratio of of stitches (on the gather) to rows (on the arm hole edge) so that I knew which stitch needed to join which row to make it even - this is possibly too pernickety for others but I like to know what I am sewing where with markers or bits of tacking thread in place before I do my proper seam.
Looking forward to seeing pics, how exciting!
