Garter stitch scarf

i’m looking to make a scarf that i’ve seen in stores. it’s like a tube. you can put your arm all the way through it but you wear it like a normal scarf. i have an idea of how to make it but don’t know what it’s called or how to find a pattern for one.

and thoughts?

happy thanksgiving!!!

oh yeah, preferable using circs. i don’t have dpn’s. yet.

A long loop - Infinity scarf. If it’s a short loop, it’s a cowl or neckwarmer. You’d have to use circs for the long one, dpns wouldn’t be able to hold the sts.

you can also knit a long staight band and then sew the cast on edge to the bind off edge.
(to make that more advanced, you can do a provisional cast on, work all the way and then do a grafting with kitchener stitch /3needle bind off to join seamlessly.)
Since I do not know where your knitting abilities are at, I do not know if you will do the easy or the more advanced part. The change is only in cast on and the bind off (replacing that by kitchener stitch or 3needle bind off). So if you want to be adventuros: dive right in.

If you do garter stitch or any other stitch for the length of the knitting…

Another - more advanced thing to do: A Moebius band, there are several instructions out there how to knit one. But that requires some daring on new techniques (still just knits and purls, but a bit more challenging on the cast on and so on).

Anyways: all these you can work either on straight needels or circs (I do only use circs, never straight needles).

yeah i would say cast on 70-ish stitches on the smaller circular needles. then just knit away! ive been making scarves like this but closing off the end with tassels instead of leaving it open… but mine are usually stockinette since i dont really like garter :\

Unless the yarn and gauge is very large, you’d need more than that. A cowl/neckwarmer needs to go over the head which is considerably larger than the neck. So you need at least as many sts as you would for a hat, a few more would be better. Something that’s at least 22" around would be good.

ha! Got it!
I was suspecting this in the first place but got derailed along the way: you want to make a long tube, but narrow. Pretty much just a scarf that is double thick and hollow inside… a long hose, pretty much. Nothing is supposed to be stuck through them but an arm would fit. So in shape like an overly long sleeve with no shaping.

well, for that you can look into a technique that is called “knitting in the round on straight needels” or you can use “magic loop” or you can use very small circs, if you find them, or you can in fact use dpn.

yeah i dont think she wants it to be able to go over her head like those… ive seen the scarves shes talking about at the store… they are a little bit wider than a sleeve but yeah, a scarf, just two sided like a scarf would look in the round without the ends hemmed…

but if you want it garter stitched just switch from knitting to purling each round…
