Finally got my Chiaogoo needles today. Now I am conflicted about how I want to make the blanket. I originally had an idea of maybe doing just a plain garter stitch blanket with color changes circa every 12 inches of length so that I have a blanket with broad stripes. I kinda like the look of those blankets. I am also considering doing a double moss stitch blanket with garter stitch border, or possibly a blanket with alternating squares knit of stockinette and reverse stockinette bordered by garter stitch. I am wondering if it would look awkward to do the second and third options with color changes.
Garter Stitch Blanket Question
I do not think it will look awkward. What is it about it you aren’t sure of?
There’s a purl bump of new colour that works into the row below on the previous colour, depending on the project some people like to avoid that at a colour change but I think it’s rather nice in the right circumstances and I’ve used it to add detail for instance stripe in 1 colour then alternating colours 1 and 2 for a few rows then solid stripe of colour 2.
Or is it the garter edge you aren’t sure about with the colour changes? You could always add the edge later in a single colour, that’s an option.
One thing I personally don’t warm to is cables done in colour stripes, to me it seems wrong, but some people love it!
Maybe swatch a few rows with the different colours and see how you like it?
Yeah, I think it’s the border. When I picture it in my head for some reason it seems like it might be awkward. But looking at pictures online today, I do see some blankets where the border changes color as well and it looks fine.
I saw this one today, its not the stitches you said but a few different stitches, nice though, it might appeal if you don’t fancy the monotony of the same stitch through the whole blanket. Not keen on the edge on it but that could be left off.
I like the idea of the stripes going to the edge, maybe its the garter border you don’t need? If you have a stitch that doesnt curl much you won’t need an extra border.
I am actually leaning toward the most monotonous pattern of all, the plain garter stitch. I might go nuts before the end, but I really like the simplistic look.
If I wasn’t worried about how much yarn I would have to use, I would probably prefer a squishy fisherman’s rib blanket. Also, I am not comfortable with fixing mistakes in fisherman’s rib.
And oh yeah… the new needles are great. Really smooth feeling. Love the stainless steel and the stitches slide easily from the cable onto the needle.
I did a flat knit brioche rib scarf. By the time it was done fixing mistakes was easy. Do a blanket it fisherman’s rib and you’ll be making your own video on fixing mistakes. Maybe I’ll do a garter stitch or brioche rib lap blanket.
Plain garter stitch is indeed very beautiful. The wide stripes right up to the edge will be great.
Wouldn’t I be using a lot more yarn with fisherman’s rib?
I didn’t knit at all during the summer except for the occasional dishcloth. I was actually kind of bored with knitting. I also like spending time outside in the summer, and I do a big garden so that sort of takes over as my hobby. Anyways, a few weeks ago, I decided to use up a half ball of yarn I had sitting around, so I made a rudimentary bag by knitting a rectangle, folding it in half and seaming up the two sides. I knitted a strap for it. Saw something like it on youtube. I made the rectangle in garter stitch. And when it was done, I realized I really liked the rectangle. That’s when I thought of doing the blanket.
I don’t know but I think so.
Fisherman’s rib is going to use more yarn, about a third more than stockinette and a bit more than garter.
Hmmm, interesting. You think it would not use much more than garter? I wonder if the half fisherman’s rib would be a lot more economical.
I suspect a bit more but not a lot. You could try making swatches with the same yarn then weighing and measuring the dimensions to get a better idea.
Alright. I am going to do that now.
Hmm maybe you are right. Garter is a pretty tight dense stitch isn’t it?
It is certainly denser and cushier and uses more yarn per 4 inch square than stockinette.
I got a set of chiagoo interchangeable needles 2 yrs ago and I love them. I use them for everything. Circular knitting, flat knitting and also use magic loop method with them. But everyone has their preferences but it’s a thumbs up from me. Hope you like them!
They are a vast improvement over the other circular needles I had.
