I am knitting my third pair of cuff down socks on 2 circular needles and am struggling with “re-arranging” the stitches after knitting 5 more. I had this problem the first time I used this pattern also. I end up really struggling to get the stitches moved from needle 1 to needle 2 with the working yarn in the right place. I ended up having to transfer (with great difficulty) all the stitches onto one completely new circular needle and then re-situating them onto the original needle 1 and needle 2. I have included the part of the pattern so you can see how it’s written. Any suggestions welcome.
Is the beginning of round marker currently at the midway point in the heel? It seems to me that you should be able to knit 5sts starting at the marker from needle #1 onto needle #2. Then slip 5sts from the other end of needle #2 onto needle #1.
That’ll leave the working yarn at the end of needle #1 and 10sts on each needle. The orientation will have shifted from profile to instep in the front, sole in the back ready to work the toe graft.
I am not using a stitch marker for the beginning of round because it will just fall off the needle. I just know that when I have worked both sets of needles (I can tell which is needle 1 and which is needle 2) and know I am beginning a new round.
So, what you are saying is that where the pattern says K5 stitches more, I should knit 5 stitches off of needle 1 onto needle 2 and then move/transfer 5 stitches off the end of needle 1 onto the other end of needle 2?
Yes, exactly. That way the yarn is at the end of needle 2 ready to graft the toe.
Salmonmac,
Thank you! I am really excited about trying this - you wouldn’t think it would be such a challenge, but if you could have seen me trying to wrest stitches from one needle to the other, getting all wrapped up in circular cables and having the working yarn in the middle of the needle, etc, you would’ve wondered how I got so messed up!
Give it a try and see if it helps. Oh and we’d love to see a photo of these socks1
