Frustrated. Please Help w Bernat Scarf Pattern

Hello!

I’m new here and to knitting. I’m currently frustrated with a bernat scarf pattern

1st row: (RS). K4. (P3. K3) twice. K1.
2nd row: K1. (P3. K3) twice. P3. K1.
3rd and 4th rows: As 1st and 2nd rows.
5th row: K1. (yo. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. K3) twice. yo. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. K1.
6th row: K1. (K3. P3) twice. K4.
7th row: K1. (P3. K3) twice. P3. K1.
8th and 9th rows: As 6th and 7th rows.
10th row: As 6th row.
11th row: K4. (yo. Sl1. K2tog. psso. yo. K3) twice. K1.
12th row: As 2nd row.

When I get to Row 5 I end up with 3 extra stitches, which from looking at Row 6 is wrong. I should still have 17 stitches after Row 5, correct?
I can’t figure out what I’m doing incorrectly? I’m starting to lose it! LOL,
Thank you in advance!

You’re doing 3 yo’s which will increase your count 3 sts. Are you also doing the corresponding k2tog’s which will decrease 3 sts and give you a net count of 17 at the end of the row?

I’m doing the k2togs. I figured the k2togs would balance out the yos. & I should end up with the same amt of stitches.

3 yo’s? I’ve been doing more than that! Maybe I’m reading the pattern incorrectly?

I’ve been doing yo Sl1 k2tog psso yo k3 twice which would give me 4 yos and 2 K2togs then yo Sl1 k2tog psso yo K1 ( but for me I end up with K3)???

Thank you for your reply!

Oy. I missed the psso. I’m sorry about that. I’ll try counting again. Meanwhile someone who can read and count might have your answer for you.

On row 5 you have 6 yarn overs and you have 3 double decreases. The 6 yarn overs increase the stitch count by 6 and the double decreases decrease 2 sts at a time (6 sts dec). You need to slip one stitch, k2tog and then pass the slipped stitch over the stitch on the right hand needle (this stitch is the one that was made by the k2tog). See if this video helps. That could be the source of the 3 extra sts.

 I could have sworn that the pattern was wrong, me poor brain :roflhard: If you are just looking at Row 5, I charted it, and it all checks out; you should have 17 stitches at the end of Row 5.

K1, yo, sk2p, yo, k3, yo, sk2p, yo, k3, yo, sk2p, yo, k1.

Try this sequence, if you are still coming out with the wrong number of stitches, you’ll need to check your work, stitch by stitch, to determine where you’ve gone wrong.

Hope this helps.

Thank you!!! Got it! I was passing the slip stitch to the left needle & not over & off.

I even watched that video! Ugh! I feel like a moron.

However, I’m still going to :woohoo:

Thank you all so much for your help! I knew I was doing something wrong!

No need to feel dumb, we’ve all gotten frustrated at one point or another, that’s why we all come here to KH, to support each other at times like this
