Front twist and back twist confusion

Hello everybody.

Im stuck at a part in the pattern where i have to work a front twist and a back twist as follows:

  • P 4, skip 1, K in front of next st but do not drop from needle, P the skipped st then drop both from left-hand needle for front twist , skip 1, P in back of next st but do not drop, K the skipped st then drop both from left-hand needle for back twist.*

My first question is that when i work this way and get to the wrong side of the work, it says to (k the k)
And (p the p) and i get confused whether i have to knit or purl these stitches at the wrong side.

Second question is that are front and back twists same as left and right twist? I just noticed that later on in the pattern i have to make front and back twist and left and right twists in the same row…i was thinking that they are the same so im a bit confused here.

Also would appreciate it if someone could clarify how they are supposed to look like from the front as from what I’ve done so far my back twist looks like a left leaning knit and the front twist…i have no idea what it looks like

Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern and designer?
On the back row, knit the V and purl the bump as it appears to you on that back row.
If it was a knit stitch on the right side, it’ll be a bump on the wrong side and so it should be purled. If it was a purl on the right side, it’ll be a V on the wrong side so knit it.
These are mini cables. Most often the twist or cable it going to leave the knit stitch showing with the other knit or purl stitch in back of that knit stitch.
See if your pattern defines these front/back twists and also right/left twists. It may be that the front/back are knit purl twists and the left/right are both knit sts depending on the designer’s intent.
I’d expect a front twist to slant left and a back twist to slant right. And as mentioned the knit stitch is usually lying to the front. Knowing the pattern and designer will help us.

Thank you for your help. I worked a swatch and tried to do the stitches correctly and got the hang of it but now im stuck at another part.

This is the pattern that im working on. Currently im stuck at row 13… the problem is that im doing everything that is written but at the end i have 8 stitches remaining unworked. I have recounted several times to see if i was missing something but i dont see where i have gone wrong…i have the exact 128 stitches but still at the end of row 13 i have those 8 stitches remaining.

I would really appreciate any help.

Really, these vintage patterns are a whole different language. The problem is in the definition of the right twist and left twist. In row 13 the section between the double asterisks calls for a right twist, P5, left twist. Those twists are 4 stitch twists as defined in Row 11 ("… sl next 2 to a cable needle and hold in back, K next 2 then P the 2 from cable needle for a right twist, …").
If you count them as 2 stitch twists you’ll be down 2sts for each. That’s 4sts in each double asterisk repeat. The double asterisk is repeated twice so that’s 8sts missing and that may well be where the count is off.

Oh thank you soo much for taking the time to help me out
