Front borders

The pattern I’m knitting has left and right front borders I’m confused to whether these will be sewn in or if attached as I go.

With right side facing, and thumb method, cast on stitch for sewing border to front, rib across nine stitches. First row (ws) (p1, K1) 5 times. Last row sets rib. Keeping continuity of rib as et (throughout), continue until left border is sufficient length when slightly stretched to go up front edge and halfway across back neck, ending with ws Cast off in rib.

Once this is done, right front having buttonholes.

I’m thinking you make the bands separately and then sewing like in a mattress stitch, and sewing ack of neck together?

Thank you for your help.

Welcome to KH!
Very lovely pattern.
Yes, the bands are knit separately in the pattern and later stitched onto the body of the cardigan. You could attach them as you go or wait until the body is finished and then attach the border slightly stretched to the body and around to the back of the neck.
Rather than casting off you could graft the two edge together with Kitchener stitch or work 3 needle bind off for a neater join.
