From the Top~~ Barabara G. Walker

I checked this book out from the library and have been studying her method. This book is a great reference on how to construct all types of sweaters.

It was published in 1972. Such a great book needs to be reworked and published again with up to date projects.

I’m sure it would be a big hit.

If there are any publishers reading please take the hint. I’ll buy a copy.

Is Knitting from the Top the one you mean? I got it a few years ago. It is a good book. While the designs may be older the technique is the same even today which I think is the point of the book giving knitters a start on designing garments themselves. I think she’s over 80 now.

A more contemporary book based on some of the same principles is Custom Knits by Wendy bernard. She has several patterns there, along with modifications for them, and some pages in the back that explain how to alter or create your own based on BW’s ideas.

But yeah, just because this was published 40 years ago doesn’t make the techniques outdated, they’re really even older than that and can be applied to ‘modern’ sweaters.

I also have Custom Knits and it’s a good one. Another good one if you’re interested in design is The Sweater Workshop by Jacqueline Fee.

Her book ‘charted knitting designs’ is my bible for cable and lace patterns. The charts look just like the finished product. It is available from Amazon.com if anybody is interested.

Thanks, Jan… I just ordered my copy from Amazon! Hurray!
