Frogging

Ok, so I am new but I have knitted before but I never heard of frogging. Can someone tell me what it is. And someone also said that you can make your sleeve longer by unraveling your cast on edge and knitting onto it. Is that possible because my friend had a lady make her a sweater and the sleeves are too short maybe it can be fixed.

What does a frog say? Rip-it, rip-it. :teehee: Frogging is just a less painful way to say that you’re ripping some knitting out.

As for making your sleeve longer, yes, it can be done. The easiest way is to pick up stitches along the bottom edge and add ribbing or some kind of edge to it.

You can take out (frog) the end stitches, but you need to secure the knit stitches that are in place with a length of yarn first so you don’t lose them. (See ‘inserting a destination row’ in the videos.)

I recently made some sleeves shorter this way, and though it was a pain getting the knitting out, the end result is one where you’d never know.

I’m not sure about the sleeves as I’ve never done it, but frogging is called that because frogs say “ribbit, ribbit” and knitters have to “rip it, rip it, rippit” which sounds like… well you get the picture…hence “frogging!” :teehee:

thanks for clearing that up, I have done lots of frogging myself. If the sweater already has a ribbed cuff would you still pick out the cast on edge and add more ribbing?

After watching the video I have another question. Is it better to do a provisional cast on when making a long sleeve sweater with ribbing in case the sleeves are too short. If they end up the right length you can just K one more row and cast off. What do you think?

I’m not sure, but I think you’d see a line where you added on. You could try it and see–nothing lost since it would pull out very easily. You could do it in a different color if that works with the sweater. My biggest problem with taking out the stitches at the cuff were the purls–they don’t want to unknit easily when you pull from the bottom.

If the sleeves are sewn on, you could also take them off, take out the bind off and add more length–another pain, though.

That sounds like a lot of work but if it is too short you probably won’t wear it so I guess I will learn how to do this.

I didn’t see this when I posted my last answer–just so there’s no confusion.

A provisional cast on would work, I think.

Adding onto the bound off edge might leave a noticeable line.
