Do I need a “book of patterns” by EZ for this sweater? Or is it posted online somewhere??? 
trying to swap for toddler patterns (on Buy/Sell) not getting any responses…But this pattern is what I would like to get…

Yes, you do need to buy the pattern, but its not expensive. I bought it recently from Schoolhouse Press, and have knitted two Baby Surprise jackets.
I found a page of notes invaluable to use along with the EZ pattern, so when you do get the pattern, I’d advise you print off the notes and refer to them along with the pattern. I actually mainly looked at them and checked back with the pattern to make sure I was on the right track, as the pattern can be quite vague - its more like a lot of jottings, not exact instructions!

Once you make one of these jackets it becomes quite addictive, they are such fun to do.
It’s difficult to get anyone to give up patterns, but especially ones as cool as the BSJ. 
Do order it from Schoolhouse Press. It’s only $3 plus shipping, but it’s well worth it. The pattern itself is difficult to figure out, but once you have it and the instructions Miss Molly gave you your good to go.
There is also a knitbabysurprise yahoo group you can join and as always the KH members are very helpful.

I wanted to make the BSJ first figuring that smaller will make it quicker to knit plus we are finally expecting another baby in the family. My Cousin is expecting her first in April, she is in Germany so a sweater will be perfect.
My question is regarding the yarn I realize that gauge is important and since I knit very tight I always have to go up a size or two. but what type of yarn have you used ? I would think that for the BSJ washable is important as is softness, would a soft synthetic be alright ? I just stopped the other day at Michaels and some of the new pastel baby yarns are so pretty and even come in different textures.

One big question what [U]length[/U] needle is best for the BSJ
I used a circular needle and worsted weight yarn. I think they’d probably fit a 3 yr old or so.

Hi everyone thanks for all the input on this pattern…I have researched all places and can’t seem to find an “easy” 2 needle sweater for a toddler…Have done the “5 hour one” and a few from LB yarns. I want to use a pattern and reduce for a newborn…Or find one for a newborn…any thoughts???

My first and only one so far was made as a trial run to get to know the pattern and figure out what yarn I wanted to make the new grand baby’s sweater from. I used Bernat Baby Softee in white. It turned out well. It looks like it will fit a newborn. I think I’ll use a worsted for the next one since the baby is coming in April it won’t really need a sweater until next fall.
If I do anything differently, I think I will use a different method of M1. Also, the pattern has you making both front sides with buttonholes so you can use it for either boy or girl. I don’t like the look of the holes on both sides. When you get to the row (around 110) that has the YO’s, if you don’t want the holes on both sides, do the following:The first set of YO’s are for the left side (boy) and the next set is for the right side (girl). Decide which you want and only follow the pattern for that side and continue in the normal pattern for the other side.

I’M SORRY. I hate it when I mistakenly hit whatever key it is on this laptop that does that before I want it to.
For my Surprise jackets I used Double Knit yarn, which I think is equivalent to the US Sport Weight yarn. The tension for one was 24 stitches per 10cm over stockinette stitch, and it’s about newborn size. The tension for the other was 22 stitches per 10cm and it is about right for a 3 - 6 month baby.
I used a circular needle.
