I need to know how to put in button holes after I have finished the sweater. I got most of them in there, but missed about three in the middle. Any suggestions?
Forgot to knit the button holes
You’ll have to sew the area with thread, then cut into the knitting.
How big are the buttons? If they’re small, they might fit through the stitches. Or would it matter if they’re left off?
If the buttonholes were just little tiny ones like on a baby sweater you can probably just put a button through the knitting, but for larger horizontal ones… There is a technique called an “afterthought buttonhole”, but it’s not for the faint of heart.
You could also seam up the ones that are there except for the top one(s) and just have a one or a few buttons at the top. I find that’s all I button anyway usually.

It’s the Einstein coat from Sally Melville’s "The Knit Stitch"
The buttons aren’t huge, but they won’t fit through the stitches…I tried already. And since it’s a coat, I can’t just put two buttons on it. I’m so mad at myself because I’ve made this coat before and I wasn’t paying proper attention to the pattern…just knitting away and messed it up. Now it’s done but for the three button holes I missed right in the middle (of course!) I will try your suggestions. Thanks everyone for your help.
