Here is my first attempt at doing stranded colorwork combined
with cables. It is for a Harry Potter swap I’m in, hence the
color combination It was definitely a challenge but
I’ve got alot of ideas and plan to do some more colored cables!
Yes and no… It was a bit fiddly keeping the floats loose and
the cable crossings correct but I wouldn’t say it was really hard,
just time consuming. I’d definitely recommend having a few cabled
pieces and stranded colorwork pieces under your belt before
combining them just so you feel comfortable with all the techniques
involved.
The center panel and border were knit seperately so I only needed
the 2 balls of yarn. The center panel could have been done using
intarsia but to help it match the thickness of the cabled edging
I went ahead and stranded it as well. Stranding the colors on the
cables didn’t add as much bulk as I though but I guess because
cables distort the fabric and make it thicker anyway, you don’t
really notice the additional color strands.
I’m planning to do a lap blanket in colors more to my taste using
this technique but I have a feeling it will take quite some time
to get done!
