FO - mostly done baby sweater with issues

All the knitting is done on this baby sweater. It was really easy to do and is quite cute, BUT I’m having problems with curling. The pattern has you doing the front “ribbed” edges with purling only (front and back), the wrists, bottom and neck are k1 p1 ribbing. For some reason the bottom edge and the center front edges want to curl. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m afraid I’m going to have to back it with ribbon or something. That might be okay for the front edges, but not on the bottom. Ugh. I followed the pattern so I have no idea what the deal is.

I made a sweater for my daughter and it did the same thing. I didn’t do anything with it (she never wears it anyway… :crying: ) Sorry I don’t have any suggestions for you, but the sweater looks adorable! :thumbsup:

Maybe you could wet it and let it dry flat? Or steam it?

It’s actually machine wash and dry yarn, but I could try that. Would it be permanent? The problem with a baby sweater is that I don’t have a baby or grandkids so it would be something I’d give away. I doubt most young mothers are going to want to pamper a kids sweater. :rollseyes: :roflhard:

You’ve made a lot of kids sweaters, Ingrid. Do you think it’s something to do with the pattern? Is there anything to prevent this or is it a common problem in small items?

I often find that an edging wants to fold in. After I blocked my Karaoke scarf, it laid flat, but now the edging wants to fold in again.

I don’t know what the solution is, but I wish I did. :thinking: Maybe if you wash the sweater and then dry it until it’s just about dry and lay if flat it might work temporarily. You could also add loops and buttons or hooks and eyes to the front.

Oh, it looks adorable!

Maybe you could sew on a zipper. It would be good zipper practice, no?

I will have to keep this in mind when I sew this sweater here in the next month or so.

When I have edges that curl like that, I use a hair dryer to heat it up and press it flat. Sometimes, it helps to stretch it out long ways a bit. The hair dryer works like an iron, without squishing the fabric.

The problem with that is that since it’s a baby sweater it would get tossed in the wash a lot. I doubt anyone is going to want to go to a lot of trouble like that everytime the baby spits up. :roflhard: IMO a baby sweater should be wash and wear.

I think that a zipper is a great idea! and it’s really an adorable sweater… a band of ribbon… (a thick ribbon the width of the ribbed edging) sewn on the inside might be really nice

good luck and imo it’s really adorable as it is… and it wont curl when it’s on!

I’ve made that pattern bunchs of times and don’t remember having that problem. But I usually do it with ties/zipper/buttons, so maybe that’s why.
Or maybe it’s just the yarn you used, sorry I couldn’t be more help.
