I knit this up for myself using Crystal Palace Iceland yarn in “Fuschia”. The pattern was super quick and easy (which was great) and I love the bright color … it always seems so cheerful to me to have bright colors to wear during the cold winter months!
I finished it using chunky braids rather than tassels in the front, and I added about 2" of braid to the back tassel to make it match the front braids better and create more movement.
I believe Crystal Palace’s Iceland yarn is actually a super bulky weight. If it helps, I followed the pattern as written and my gauge was 3 stitches per inch.
Thanks! I used Crystal Palace’s Iceland yarn … and I used 1 full skein and about 1/4 of a second skein (including the braids and tassel).
I created each of my braids as follows:
Cut 6 (for thinner braids use fewer strands, for heavier braids use more) lengths of yarn, each about 24" long (this created braids that were about 10"-11" when finished, if you want your braids longer or shorter then cut your lengths of yarn either longer or shorter).
Use crochet hook (a tapestry needle or other tool will work equally well) to pull each strand of yarn through the edge of your finished hat where you want your braids to be. I usually do it between the stitches of the first and second rows I think so that they’re at the edge.
Pull each of the strands through until the ends are even at the bottom - so you end up with each of your 6 strands being doubled.
Divide your 12 strands into 3 groups and braid. Secure the end of your braid with a small elastic (this is optional, but I do it just to be sure that they are secure), and then cut a short length of yarn to wrap around the elastic to cover it. If you don’t use an elastic you could just tie off your braid with a piece of yarn.
Trim the ends of your braid so that they are all even.
