I decided to make this for my dad’s 70th birthday…my first experience with cables!
I used Rowan Cashsoft DK on #4 needles (pattern called for #6). The color seemed appropriate for a Green Bay Packer fan, although I would have preferred it in blue and orange for the Chicago Bears! 
The pattern is from One Skein by Leigh Radford.

I’ve looked at that pattern too—it’s nice to see another example knit up. I’ll be adding that to my list —I do playground “duty” at an elementary school, gaiter’s are perfect to wear. No pieces to dangle, no chance for someone to pull on it, or try to swing from a long scarf. I do think that you should make your dad a second one in GOLD—just in case there’s another “Ice Bowl” at Lambeau–He can be prepared.
