Wow, thanks everyone! I inserted a plastic egg. It’s a little awkward to do the last few rows with the egg inside, but the result is worth it. Stuffing looks to wonky.
If you put some beans in it and then sealed it with glue I guess it could be a rattle. 
Not sure how the glue would wash though, but maybe the knitting itself would hold it tight anyway.
