My very, very dear friend’s daughter is expecting in April. Last year I had crocheted a layette set from a 1945 pattern that looks heirloom quality, anticipating this would happen, eventually. But I felt compelled to make something specifically for this baby.
My choice wasn’t well thought out. My hands no longer handle thicker yarn and needles well. Even though this is only 24" X 34", it quickly became to heavy and awkward for my hands, so when I got to the end of the 2nd skein,[B] I finished![/B]
The yarn is Caron’s Simply Soft, 4 ply. I used a total of 12 oz, working on a size 6 needle, but that would be about a size [B]8[/B] or [B]9[/B] for most knitters.
A great project for beginners, or quick for fast knitters.
Pattern has a 24 st repeat. I had 168 sts on this one.
You’ll have to do the math for your tension and size you want.
It’s all garter st. Begins with 2 rows knit.
Work pattern row: (K 2tog) X4, (K1, YO) X8, (K 2tog) X4.
3 rows knit between pattern rows.
Ending with: knit 1 row after a pattern row, and BO on the next row.
It’s really pretty. I’m sorry to hear about your hands hurting you. My Sister in law told me she wraps one of those Boppy things around her middle (it’s used for nursing a baby, to support the baby so the weight isn’t all in your arms) when she knits, and lets her arms rest on it, along with the weight of the project.

I did try a pillow on my lap, but as the blanket grew, it was in the way.
My hands have been going down hill for about a decade. That’s why I stick to baby things. I guess size 5 needles and sport weight yarn are the thickest I can manage comfortably.
And I can’t quit knitting until I knit through my stash. :knitting::knitting::knitting:

I got out some size 2 and 3 needles and baby sport weight for some booties
and my hands seem to be almost back to normal. :happydance:
I can’t not knit, it more of an obsession than a hobby. :doh:
