Flat I-cord pattern

I need help! I need to learn how to make a flat I cord for a purse handle.(is flat) I made it a few year ago. My notes said : co 9row 1 k5, slip the next 4 sts purlwise repeat row 1 till lenght desire.
What!! I dont remember if i did it with DPN or SN ? I tried last nine but it doesn’t look right.

flat I-cord in usually done on DPNs or a circular because you are always sliding the stitches back, so it goes like this:

k5, sl 4 pwise

turn and slide sts across to other side

carrying working yarn across back of work, k5, sl 4 pwise

turn and slide sts across to other side

repeat, etc.

However, I’m not familiar with making an I-Cord with slipped stitches except when doing an applied I-cord at an edge, so it might be different… you might just knit normally back and forth, the slipped stitches that you are knitting 5 of the next row creating the applied cord…

This makes sort of like a belt, and you’d normally use a dpn but you might be able to use a regular straight needle because you do have to turn it since it doesn’t say anything about sliding the sts back to the beg of the needle. I think.

there is another way: knit one stitch, slip the next with yarn in front and then work that way to the end of row. turn your work. Now knit the stitches you just slipped and slip the stitches you just knit with yarn in front… it’s called knitting in the round on straight needles.

2 needles only, no “mass slipping” of stitches, just working alternatingly.

I’m posting this here because I keep forgetting how to do the flat cord and I love it!!

For a 9 stitch width as in the first post:
(Any type of needle is fine, the work is turned not slid)

CO 9 sts
K 5, bring yarn to front and slip 4 sts purlwise
Turn work, (yarn will be behind work) give a little tug to yarn, K 5, bring yarn to front and slip 4 sts purlwise

Repeat until desired length. Can be done with any number of stitches.

Makes a very strong and not stretchy flat strap. ( I think this is also called a double I-cord, since it looks like I-cord on both edges.)
