Flat Hat

After finishing a bag I’m working on and a hat for a friend, I want to make another hat. However, I want to knit it on the flat and sew the edge/s together.

So I find myself with problems:

  • Should I knit two separate flat pieces and sew them together? What shape do I give them?
  • Can I knit one long piece and sew the two edges together? What shape do I give it then?
  • When sewing, what stitch do I use?

Thanks a bunch if you answer!

Usually they are knit in one piece and seamed up one side. Here’s a few patterns. If you are making an adult hat the cast on is usually 72-80 in worsted weight yarn so keep that in mind of the pattern is for a child.

You shape the top just like you do for a hat made in the circular method, but you should leave a seam stitch along each edge. If you are designing it yourself think about the ribbing at the edge (if you use it) so that the ribbing stitches will be in the right order for the ribbing to continue perfectly around the hat where they join. But you also want to add a seam stitch that will disappear when you sew up. Use kitchener stitch for seaming your hat. I make the seam stitch in St st all the way on the right side of the hat if it is basically a St st hat.

There is a style of hat that is made of two squares or rectangles that are sewn together on the sides and top. It makes a hat with two points and often has a pom-pom on each point, rather jester hat style. They are cute.
