This is a well known bag pattern but I am not getting the ‘lace’ section right.

I think my confusion is in the first line:
k1 yo, sl 1, k1, yo, psso the knit st and the following yo; repeat from
When I pass the knit stitch over I am also passing over the stitch behind it. But that just doesn’t create the right pattern. I tried passing over the yo and then the knit but that doesn’t seem right either. I know this is simple but I am not understanding. Can someone give me the ‘dummies’ explanation please?
Am I supposed to be left with the slip stitch at the top of the right needle after each series between the **? I can’t seem to sort this easily.
k1 *yo, sl 1, k1, yo, psso the knit st and the following yo
You’re passing the slipped stitch over the k and yo that you just made. When they say following, they mean the yo that followed the knit.
When they get on your right needle, they’ll be in this order:
yo k sl
- .2. .3
3 will pass over 2 and 1
The yo you drop on the next row is the first one–before the slipped stitch.
I hope I made sense, here.
Gosh that was a fast answer Ingrid! Thanks so much. Very late here so will follow what you have outlined in the a.m. and see whether I have it right. I can see exactly what you mean here and see how I have wrongly conceived the explanation in the pattern. I knew it had to be wrong because nothing in the following 3 lines was ‘true’ and that part I understood even though I am unsure why the knit section (Row 3) simply doesn’t have knit the row. It’s not as if you are knitting two together are you? I wondered this re the purl also actually.
I need help again
I now understand the first row but as soon as I went to do the second purl row I instantly went wrong. The P2. On the row these stitches are in a small cluster together and I suspect I am supposed to P2 together and then let the yo drop off. Purling them as two separate stitches just didn’t work for me.
