Fitting cowl

Ok… I found a cowl that I can knit up with this yarn. Well sort of. It still will not match gauge. Pattern calls for 11 sts. for 2 inches and I get 10 on a size 9 needle. Pattern calls for a size 6 needle. Big difference there.
I can’t find any patterns at all to use up this yarn. Has to be something fairly small - cowl, scarf etc… Long story on this yarn from hell.,…
But I figured a cowl doesn’t have to be perfect gauge but I would like it to fit and on the bigger side.
How many stitches should I add onto this pattern to make up for that 1 stitch less in gauge?? I could go up a needle size to an 10 but I don’t have any 10’s and the 9 is about as big as I want to go as far as the knitted looking portion of it.
It’s an easy no pattern type cowl.

Actually if the pattern calls for 11sts/2" and you are getting 10sts/2", you’ll need to cast on fewer sts than the pattern calls for. For every 11 sts in the pattern you want to cast on 10 (so if the pattern says CO 110, you’ll CO 100). How many sts does the pattern say to CO?

See what you get on a size 8 needle, the size 9s make the gauge a little larger.

Smaller needles = less sts per inch, larger ones = more sts per inch.
