Would markers between repeats or every two repeats help?

As Salmonmac suggest try to use markers. Chain row counter is easier for me, it sits on needles and cant forget to move.

Great idea. Don’t know how I never came up with this solution. Sometimes can’t see what should be so obvious

Try is video. It helped me

Thanks so much. Very good video. She makes everything very clear. I’ll have to give it a try

I came back to read this again because I’m fixing to start the mate of the first sock. The first is definitely too loose in toe area and ball of foot. So I am going to try casting on less. Her directions state for size medium but if you choose, to change in multiples 4. So she states cast on 24, so l am trying to decide between 16 or 20. With fingering weight yarn I feel like 4 stitches might not make that much of a difference. Anyway so after the toe increases I should have 64 but I am assuming this also decreases to 56 or 60 relative to the changes I make at toe. ( this math stuff not a strong suit).

If you need to adjust stitch count and need a multiple of 4 on the instep you can have fewer stitches on the sole to make the pattern work. I think even a difference of 4 fewer stitches on the sole should be fine. Do try the sock on before you commit to knitting the entire foot with a specific number. I try to avoid giving actual advice but I will make that a very strong, heart felt suggestion. Before I have enough length to try it on I check for fit with increases by laying the toe on the widest part of my foot and over the sides. It should need just a little stretch to cover the top of my foot. My toes are too long to try it on to know when to stop increasing. Another thing I found works is to use a cardboard cutout of the outline of the foot to fit. IME the sock should fit nicely without stretching when the foot cutout is slipped inside. I usually start with around 12 or14 sts/ea needle. You did one and tried it on. You can see how it fits the ends of your toes and think about how to adjust the count. It’s not that crucial that you start with the ‘right’ number. I have long toes and tend to use fewer stitches to start and that means a few more rounds increasing to make the toe longer.

I realized before I ever knit my first sock from reading patterns and doing the gauge math as best I could that sock sizes in patterns mean squat for me. I ignore them. When I want to incorporate a stitch pattern I just figure out the best way to accommodate the number of stitches I’ll need for the repeats. I’m like a two year old that insists on ‘me do’ and doing it my way. I expect I’m a very bad influence and I should tell you to ignore me.

GG you made me try knit socks that I was anxious about all patterns, sizes, stitches…, and I did it! Your way is best for me, do it on the way as you go. I buy pattern but still adjust numbers to fit my needs.
