First YS experience

Can you remember the first time you walked into a yarn store? Do you remember that thrill and excitement you had because you never knew what to expect?

I had that today. My first EVER LYS experience, and it was… unexplainable. I just wanted to take everything home because of all the yarn they had there that felt so amazing to touch. I could tell this was no walmart experience either… Ohh they even had Fiber Trends patterns!! :happydance:

I ended up walking out of there with a size 9 16" circular, and Plymouth Encore yarn in a lime green color. I have to say that was the best ever.

Another thing… I understand why everyone here buys Addi-Turbos online too :shock: $15 for just one pair! :shock: :shock:

My first LYS experience was rather frightening, but my second was awesome… I’m gonna go with that one and say :thumbsup: so cool. I’m impressed you didn’t buy more!!! :rofling:

I told my mom that I’m definatly going again.

I need to earn money now… and I want at least $40 to spend :rofling:

:happydance: Yeah, Jenelle! I have a tiny problem with my favorite LYS - they take plastic! :shock: Take my advice… leave the plastic at home, stick with your cash and do not listen to the siren song of the yarn.

Jenelle has one advantage over us in the spending-too-much-on-yarn department. She’s got about 5 years before she can get a credit card of her own. She also has her mom to keep her in check. Maybe I should adopt a sensible mom. :thinking:

Mine takes plastic, but not Discover, which is what I generally use if charge anything. So that definitely keeps me under control when I go there. But the other LYS I go to…well, that’s a different story.

Yay Janelle!! Try not to blow your college money on yarn, ok?

Yay, Jenelle! Welcome to the next step in our shared obsession! I definitely remember my first LYS experience. I had no idea anything like it existed. I had been a Hobby Lobby and Michael’s girl until I happened to drive by Village Wools and stop in on a whim. What a wonderful discovery! :drooling:

Bah! That will never work! I collect teddy bears and whenever i showed mom a new bear i got she said “did you really NEED another bear?”

ummm who said it is about need?

now that i knit whenever we go shopping she wants to take me to her stitch shop. I feel bad because they don’t have as much good yarn as my LYS and i am generally not that interested. Soooo i tell her i really don’t need any new yarn. (Yep…you see this coming)

There is no such thing! I went yarn shopping with my mother, and she was a 100% enabler! I thought she would get upset for me with buying yarn when I still have debts to pay (student loan, orthodontics… etc) but NO… she just encouraged me to buy more!

I’m glad you had fun Jenelle! I hope you get to go again really soon.

AAAAHHHhhhh the first YS. Mine was a little shop in Havard square in 1990 (that doesn’t exist anymore). I bought TONS of Lambs Pride bulky and I still have some in my stash. :oops: Welcome to the club Jenelle (what’s yer Blog address?)

Had my 1st YS experience today. Fell in love with Brown Sheep Company and Lamb’s Pride yarns. Somehow I resisted making a purchase. Guess 'cause I wasn’t sure how much I may want of one dye lot. Will be checking my pattern books for the next project and will definitely return. Fortunately, the YS is close by and just opened recently…so it should be there when I return. Actually I was looking for a Berroco pattern booklet which they did not have…didn’t have many patterns at all…mostly yarn, but as I said the shop is new.

While I was there, I put in a good word for Knittinghelp.com

I stopped by a new YS that I hadn’t visited before this afternoon, and it was great! There’s a modest little LYS about 3 minutes from my house (thank god I don’t drive by it on my way home from work, my paychecks would never make it home!), but I made the longer trek to check this other one out and was very happy I did. TONS of sock yarns, Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride and Prairie Silk, and buckets of Manos del Uruguay! :happydance:

I picked up some Raspberry Lamb’s Pride for the hoodie I’m fixin’ to start as soon as I finish DH’s socks.

:cheering: So glad you guys had a great first time trip… its very addicting… I ran into mine today to just grab my mom’s pattern and yarn nothing else… I was good but I did touch some new items LOL :shock: I couldn’t belive I was so good…

I did not go to a realy ys until I was in my 20s either. I had to move to “the big town” first. But I remember walking in and being so overwhelmed by everything I saw. And I imagined every woman in there was an acomplished fiber artist. I was so tongue tied and humbled (because I was a beginner with no dexterity) that it took me until just this year to go back. (thats more years than I want to admit to)

I am obviously more confident now than I was then. Now I walk in and am so amazed by how friendly everyone is. No question is stupid, no one has made me feel as though I were wasting their time. I even got a lesson on how to spin with a drop spindle. Lovely ladies all!

I agree!! I just got done with my FIRST hat ever made on circulars!! :happydance: I used a lime green color, and put a black star on it too. It’s so cool!!! :happydance:
