First v-neck - need help

Hi, this is my first v-neck vest, and I’m not quite sure if I’m doing this right. Here’s what I’m working on:

Shape Armhole and V-Neck - 64sts on needle
Row 1 (RS): Bind off 4 sts, k26 sts, k2 tog, join a 2nd ball of A, k2 tog, k to end.
Row 2 (WS): Bind off 4 sts, working both sides at once, with separate balls of yarn, p across both sides of neck.
Row 3: K1, k2 tog, k to last 2 sts of first side, k2 tog; on second side, k2 tog, k to last 3 sts, k2 tog, k1.
Row 4: Purl.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 twice more. Continue as established, working neck decs every other row 9 times more - 13 sts remain for each shoulder.
When armhole measures same as back, bind off.

Sew right shoulder seam.
From RS, with smaller needles and A, pick up and k45 sts evenly spaced along left front neck edge, (pick up and k1, place marker, pick up and k1) at center of V-Neck, pick up and k45 sts evenly spaced along right front neck, and 24 sts across back neck - 116 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Work in k2, p2 Rib to 2 sts before marker, p2 tog, slip marker, p2tog, work in rib to end.
Row 2: Work in rib to 2 sts before marker, k2 tog, slip marker, k2 tog, work in rib to end.
Rep last 2 rows once, then Row 1 once more. Change to B and bind off in rib. Sew left shoulder and neckband seam.

The problem that I’m having is in the bold area … I end up with 2 more stitches on the right needle than I have on the left needle… is there an error in this pattern or is it supposed to be that way?

The decs match, so check to make sure you had the right number of sts when you divided for the V or had them divided right. There should have been 32 sts on each side.
BO 4, k26, k2tog and you’re at the V. Then do the other side, k2tog and k30 to the end. BO 4 sts on the WS and work across both shoulder sts. Then you dec at the beg of the row, both sides of the neck and at the end of the row.

I did what you said, and it still doesn’t add up to even sts per needle. I did BO 4, k26, k2tog, new yarn - k2tog, but could only k29 and not k30 like you said t knit. After second BO, it gives me 26sts on one side and 28 on the other.

If you could only do 29 sts on the second shoulder, then you only had 63 to start with instead of 64. Or miscounted and did too many on the first side. Check how many sts you bound off? Count the number that you passed over the next one.

Well that’s just it, the first time I did it I figured I made a mistake at the BO or something, but now it’s the 3rd time I’ve done it, and it still doesn’t work out.

I dunno, there’s nothing wrong with the instructions. Let’s take it row by row -
1 - BO 4, k26, k2tog, that’s 27 sts. Jump the gap, k2tog, knit to end and that’s 31 sts on that side.
2 - BO 4, knit to gap, 27 sts, knit other side, should be 27 sts still.
3 - k1, k2tog, K to last 2 sts before the gap, k2tog, 25 sts. On the other side of the gap, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog k1, 25 sts.

You seem to have one st more on one side which makes me think you had 63 instead of 64 to start with.

lol, I feel like Im going nuts! Ok, there are 64sts to begin with, BO 4, - that leaves a st on the needle, (1st), k26 (that makes 27sts) k2tog (28sts), jump the gap, k2tog, knit to end, gives 30. That’s what I get.

Ahhh, the st left on the needle counts as part of the k26. You really only knit 25. Then it works out.

That must be it! Thanks
