First stitch disappears

Help!!!
I picked out a drop pattern 85-5 which has a hat pattern. I am making the hat using circular needles and am loosing the first stitch which is the join. The video sticks and just at the part I need. The gap to join is big no matter what I do and after k2p2 the first round the join stitch disappears. What am I doing wrong? The rest of the pattern is easy but the beginning in not! I have never had such difficulty knitting before!! I should mention this is my first time knitting in a circle. I have made knitted articles but never in a circle and I would like to be able to make socks. :?? :?? :?? :?? :??

So the stitches are joined, but the first stitch is missing? I’m not sure what is going on… could you be casting on incorrectly?

(Are you sure you counted right? I know I’ve counted wrong on occasion when I have a lot of stitches.)

What kind of CO are you using? Some of them like backwards loop or knitted can drop stitches off when you go to join for the first row. A longtail or cable CO is much better, and there are tricks to tighten up the gap, like casting on 1 extra and knitting it together with the first stitch on the round. Or maybe you’re dropping a stitch at the end of the first round.

Thank you ladies! It seems the problem is with the slip knot. It slips off and is gone… The cast on is continental and the rest of the stitches in the first row are beautiful except for the drop off. I think I will try the extra stitch and eliminate the problem… I don’t have any problems with a slip knot when I crochet. Thanks again!!!
