First project recommendations?

HI,
I am a new knitter—just a few weeks now…I am ready to start my first project—does anyone have suggestions of a fun, but easy project? Thanks!

Something flat is a good first project - a scarf or a dischcloth, maybe?

Make it something you like and will use, not too big so you don’t get bored or frustrated, with a yarn that isn’t too much to handle at this stage of the game–a smooth one, wool, cotton or acrylic as you like, probably light-colored so you can see your stitches as you work. If you can lay hands on some inexpensive feltable wool, you can make a simple tote bag and felt it. That way, if you do make any mistakes, they’ll disappear in the wash

Hi—I am also a new knitter! I have been working on a garter stitch scarf. You just CO, knit every row, and cast off! It has been good for practicing my knit stitch. I used worsted weight yarn and size 13 needles. It is bright red. Anyway, I work full time, so I only get about an hour in each day, but it is coming along. Good luck! Isn’t knitting relaxing and fun? (ok, sometimes it is not relaxing, but still I like it.)

As an aside, what do I do second? I want to do something with knits and purls, or something with increase and decreases, but like the previous poster said, not something huge like a blanket.

Thanks everybody for input!
I was thinking about trying a short skarf with a button hole (saw this in my book)–do you think this would be too difficult for a beginner?

You should be able to do it - if you have any questions - just ask…
:knitting:

I would suggest a scarf since it was my first project also >.>
But I got tired after one skein, so I think your idea of a short scarf is brilliant! If it’s the scarf I think it is, then I think it’s a wonderful project for a beginner =) And like fellow knitters have said in previous responses, feel free to ask. Although in my case, it’s more like complain innocent whistle Good luck with your first project!

One thing I recommend is getting asking when you buy your yarn about which needles are best suited for it. It’s easy to get frustrated with that when you’re new. Trust me!

I am fairly new too! Where did you find the pattern for the scarf with the buttonhole?

Here are the patterns I usually recommend to first time knitters. They are quick to make, so you don’t get frustrated waiting for them to be finished.
