I’m working on the “Retro Spirit Jacket” pattern from Bernat Softee Chunky “Autumn Knits”. I am at the part of the sweater where you are to divide for armholes. No matter what I do in following the directions, I’m left with stitches or I don’t have enough. The part of the pattern is 2 color work, if that helps (?)
Here is the portion of the pattern:
Divide for armholes: Next row: (RS). note, I have 128 stitches
Keeping cont of chart, pat 29 sts. Cast off next 6 sts. Pat 58 sts (including st on needle after cast off). Cast off next 6 sts. Pat 29 sts (including st on needle after cast off).
Left front: cont on last 29 sts. Cont working chart…
I’m so frustrated! Can anyone make sense of this?!?!
The math seems to work. How many sts are you off? It could be that you’re not doing the BOs correctly, that’s something I have trouble with. You’ll use 7 sts per BO and the one left on your needle will count as st #1 of the next set of sts. If find this beyond totally confusing and accept it on faith that it works, and indeed it does.
Hi and welcome!
What if you mark off the sts before you do the row? You could tie loops of yarn or use split markers. That way, if you’re losing count or making some mistake, you’ll be able to catch it before you get to the end of the row. As GG mentioned, you’ll use 7 sts to bind off 6 but the pattern very nicely accounts for the extra stitch each time.
You can also request help from Yarnspirations Customer Support. They are awesome! Yarnspirations is the home for Patons, Bernat, Caron, and Lily yarns.
Thank you for the suggestions. I think I was getting stuck because of binding off requiring 7 sts. So, here I am. I’ve made it to the front left of the the pattern and none of this is making sense to me at all. I’m going to try emailing the design support team.
Design support should be able to help.
As for the bind off, to do the common bind off, you knit 2sts and lift the first over the second. Only count the lifted stitch as one bound off. You can see that it must then take one extra stitch to do the bind off of however many the pattern requires.
