First attempt to knit a sweater! Help!

I have decided to knit a sweater. I found this pattern online from Lion Brand website and need some help, please.

http://www.lionbrand.com/printablePatterns/50667A.pdf

I don’t know how to “keeping first and last 5 sts in rib as established”? Do I just put the first and last 5 sts in stitch holder and then just work the center? And how to do the side shaping? Do I just continue working the stitches that I have on the needle? :??

Thanks a bunch!

When it says ‘as established’ that means you will keep those 5 stitches in the same pattern that you’d been doing. In this particular pattern, you’d been working basically a 1x1 rib with the first stitch of each row slipped. So when you are moving onto the next set of instructions, it simply wants you to keep doing the Sl1 (K1,P1) pattern on the first and last 5 stitches of every row, the same as you had been doing, but the center stitches will now be worked in reverse stockinette. All stitches will continue to be worked, nothing will be put on holders.

Thank you! :muah:

I’m pretty sure I’ll be back with more questions on this pattern. I’m so nervous with this attempt of knitting a sweater for the first time, which I think it’s ridiculous and hilarious at the same time.

Hi Elza B! Good luck with your sweater, hope it turns out!! It’s nice how the pattern is so flowing, is it really just one piece?! It’ll be so exciting when you’re down to the last few stitches…

Such large pieces of knitting are like investing don’t you think? You invest your time and effort (& $$$ on yarn!) hoping it will merely break even (look & fit ok).

Okay this pattern is really confusing… HELP!!

LEFT FRONT
With straight needles, cast on 53 (61, 69) sts.
Rows 1 and 3 (WS): Sl 1, (k 1, p 1) to end of row.
Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, (p 1, k 1) to end of row.
Row 4: Sl 1, (p 1, k 1) twice, (p 3, k 5) to last 8 sts, p 3,
(k 1, p 1) twice, k 1.
Row 5: Sl 1, (k 1, p 1) twice, (k 3, p 5) to last 8 sts, k 3,
(p 1, k 1) twice, p 1.
Rep Rows 4-5 until piece measures 5 in. [12.5 cm] from
beg, end with a RS row.
Keeping first and last 5 sts in rib as established, work
center 43 (51, 59) sts in Rev St st (p on RS, k on WS) for
3 (3½, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm], end with a RS row.

Side Shaping
Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, (k1, p1) twice, purl to end of row.
Row 2 (Dec Row): K 1, ssk, knit to last 5 sts, (k 1, p 1)
Free Knitting Pattern: Lion Cashmere Blend Flattering Sweater Page 2 of 4
twice, k 1.
Rep Rows 1-2 twice more, end with a RS row. Keeping first 5 sts in rib as established, work in St st for 3 (3½, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm], end with a RS row.

Rev St st Section
Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, (k1, p1) twice, knit to last st, p 1.
Row 2 (Dec Row): K 1, p2tog, purl to last 5 sts, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 1.
Rep Rows 1-2 until 39 (46, 53) sts remain. Keeping first 5 sts in rib as established, work even in Rev St st for 3 (3½, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm], end with a WS row.

Shape Sleeve
Next Row: Cast on 34 sts, purl to last 5 sts of Left Front, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 1 – 73 (80, 87) sts.
Work even in Rev St st as established, keeping 5 front edge sts in rib, until sleeve measures 7 (8, 9) in. [18 (20.5, 23) cm], end with a WS row. Place 6 front edge sts on one holder and remaining 67 (74, 81) sts on another holder.

Here are my questions:

 1. I did the left front as called for in the pattern. The last part of this section said “keeping first and last 5 sts in rib…, end with a RS row”

The center sts was done as called for in Rev St st section - but the last part of that section said “end with a WS row”.

I thought it said to end it with a WS row :?? not the RS row.

 1. I have now finished the pattern in Rev St st section - do I continue on with the Side Shaping?

 2. For the Shape Sleeve - since no sts will put on holder - how do I cast on additional 34 sts? Looking at the diagram, it does make sense, though, since the sleeve is attached to the left front. But I don’t know how to cast on while continuing the row. Do I do the sleeve after the side shaping?

I wish I have one member of the mod squad sitting next to me now. That would be awesome!

Please help me! Thanks a bunch!

1) I did the left front as called for in the pattern. The last part of this section said “keeping first and last 5 sts in rib…, end with a RS row”

You do rows 4-5 until the piece measures 5 in. That section ends with a RS row.

Then you work for an additional 3 (3 1/2, 4) in. and end that with a RS row.

After you do this, then you proceed with the side shaping.

Your best bet is to cast on the 34 stitches at the end of the previous row, then work them as part of the first row of the sleeve part. Either that, or you can cast on with another strand and continue with the left front. You’re likely to get a gap that way, though.

It looks like you do the sleeves after the side shaping, since it doesn’t say to do it at the same time.

Ingrid - hhmmm… when do I do this section:

Rev St st Section
Row 1 (WS): Sl 1, (k1, p1) twice, knit to last st, p 1.
Row 2 (Dec Row): K 1, p2tog, purl to last 5 sts, (k 1, p 1) twice, k 1.
Rep Rows 1-2 until 39 (46, 53) sts remain. Keeping first 5 sts in rib as established, work even in Rev St st for 3 (3½, 4) in. [7.5 (9, 10) cm], end with a WS row.

Do I do this for the center st of the left front? :wall:

It looks like you do this after the side shaping is complete. Is there a link to the pattern?

Yes, I posted the PDF format of the downloaded pattern in my first post here.

Seeing the way it’s put together helps alot.

It looks like you do each section in order.

You do the bottom ribbing, then side shaping with regular st st, a rev st st section, then the sleeve, continuing in rev st st. These get put on hold, you do the right front and then they get attached. Pretty cool concept.

So if you just do what they say, step by step, you should be ok.

Thank you so much, Ingrid! :muah:

That’s a nice sweater–I printed it to put on the pile.

Okay… more question on this pattern. I just finished the shape sleeve part of the left front and got all my sts on holders as instructed. Now… I’m confused and I don’t know how to continue on the pattern for the right front.

(20.5, 23) cm], end with a WS row. Place 6 front edge sts on one holder and remaining 67 (74, 81) sts on
another holder.
GOT ALL THESE DONE. THE NEXT PART IS WHAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND.

RIGHT FRONT
Work as for Left Front, reversing all shaping. End with a WS row, placing last 6 sts on holder.

When I look at the diagram - it looks like it’s a one piece with continuous sts for left and right front. So do I use a new ball of yarn and cast on the sts as called for in left front and reverse all shaping (which means WS becomes RS and vice versa, right?)??? :??

Please help. Thanks!

You’ve worked the left front up to where you’ll join them.

Now you need to get the right front to that point. So use a new ball of yarn and do the side shaping and sleeve, but on the opposite edge than the left.

So, yes, you can do the reverse shaping by switching ws for rs, plus you have the left side to refer to to make sure you’re working on the correct edge of the right front. Make sense?

After working the last row of the right front, then you cast on and join the two halves.

It does make sense now. One more question - can I cut the yarn off the left front that is now finished or should I just leave it?

Thanks, Ingy! :muah:

You can cut it; it looks like the sides get connected with the yarn used on the right front.
