Finishing a patchwork quilt

Hi there I am planning to knit a child’s patchwork quilt, in 35 cm squares (about 14 inches), probably 4 across and 6 long.
My question is the best way to join the squares. Is mattress stitch the best way, and would it look weird to knit 4 lengths and join those together with mattress stitch?

You can mattress st them together, or crochet with a slip st or single crochet. Many blankets are made in strips and sewn together, so it won’t look odd at all.
