No, they were both top down!
The contrast yarn is actually more purple looking than in the pics, and it went really well with the purple streaks in the main color. I bought the yarns separately and they coincidentally worked together! I love it when that happens!

those are gorgeous. did you knit the heel such that it was added at the end and w/out a big gusset? I know there is a name for it …anyway, I really like the look. Do you normally do socks that way? I need to pick a pattern and start another pair of socks for the hubby and may try that heel.
The heel is the Fish Lips Kiss heel by the Sox Therapist on Ravelry. It is SOOOOO easy and looks and fits great, too!
