Fingerless Gloves and the Increases...HELP!

Rather than relax on Christmas day, I decided what the heck why not start a new project. After 13 rows of K2 P2 I felt I was doing a pretty good job for not having the greatest confidence level in my beginner skills. However, now I am to the part of the pattern where it is telling me to:

Gusset:
Setup Round: K16, Place Marker, Increase 1, K1, Increase 1, Place Marker, Knit to end of round
Round 1: K around slipping all markers
Round 2: K around slipping all markers
Round 3: K to first marker, slip marker, increase 1, K to next marker, Increase 1, Slip Marker, K to end of round.

Repeat rounds 1-3 until you have 13 stitches between the markers –row 18 since the end of the ribbing.

Well I wasn’t sure about the Increases. Does an increase count as the K1? I increased 1 and knit it and then Knit 1 and increased 1 again and knit it. Now that I’ve gone a ways I think I shouldn’t have done what I did. I am not even 100% sure if I did the increase correctly. (Sorry if I am not getting the knitting lingo down, I am new  .) I used the increase video found one here, Make One Left.

Can anyone help me sort this out? Please?

It should say somewhere in the pattern notes how to do the increase - it could be a kfb (knit front and back) or m1, both of which are on the increases page. But it’s not simply the k1, that’s just k1 stitch by itself. The m1L puts the new stitch between 2 old stitches.
